Today begins the second annual Interguild Olympics. Unlike last year, I will first make a news post kicking off the entire event, and then I'll immediately make another news post releasing all of this week's rounds.

The Interguild Olympics are a varied collection of competitions that we hold in July. Each theme is named and themed after some Olympic event. There are more than 20 different categories this year, and I've estimated that we'll finish around Sunday, August 15th, as opposed to last year, which finished on August 1st. The categories are set to begin all on different dates, and they also have different durations. Some last for only a week, while others last for two, three, or even four weeks. Each week on Friday, I will post an IO Update, which releases the new categories that are opening that week, while also mentioning which are closing and which are still running. Last year, all categories closed on August 1st, but the staff has decided that this new method is best (even if it is a little confusing) so that we can judge the categories as they end, rather than having to judge the entire IO at once. It will also let us keep medal counts, making the entire event more competitive.

Like the real Olympics, you can choose which categories you want to enter in, rather than feeling forced to enter all of them. However, you are also allowed to submit entries into more than one comp, if that entry is compatible.

Also, most of our members will be trying to earn victories for the teams they are in. Three weeks ago, we opened sign-ups for anyone willing to be part of a team in the Interguild Olympics. The staff then organized all sign-ups into three carefully balanced teams, which we released last Saturday. Since then, the teams have been given each their own secret forum board in which they've been discussing what their team names would be. The three teams and their members are as follows:

Team GREATS
Harumbai
shos
krotomo
guyguyxtreme
soccerboy13542
Woodstock
The KarmaBites
imtimi
Isa
GF4 (aka: goldfun4)
Dekudude
Bmwsu
canadianstickdeath
The Ninja Koopas
Ckjr
Livio
Yaya
Jazz
evan

Note: You do not have to be part of a team to participate in the Interguild Olympics.

Now that the IO has begun, we are no longer accepting requests to join teams. This is done to avoid creating an unfair advantage for either team, especially after we spent a good amount of time making sure they were balanced.

The teams make it feel similar to the real Olympics in that athletes try to win medals for their home country. Each time a team member wins a category, the team gets points added to their ranking. There is also a twist: each team must have at least one entry entered into each and every round of the IO. If none of the team members submit an entry (and it can't just be a spam entry) into any one round, then that team will lose points in their ranking. By the end of the IO, whichever team has the highest ranking wins and everyone in it gets cool trophies.

Also new to the IO this year is the Pentathlon. It is a mini-tournament that runs alongside the IO, with five one-week rounds consisting of small but unconventional challenges. These are basically just five more rounds in the overall IO, but they are challenging, so we linked them together in a tournament so that people can feel more motivated to try them out, especially since winning the tournament won't be an easy feat and can yield lots of points for the winner's team.

This page will also include links to all of the categories.

Week One
IO 2010 Pentathlon Round 1 - Try Something New
IO 2010 - Math Olympiad (Puzzles Games)
IO 2010 - Swimming (HATPC Water Levels)
IO 2010 - Instant Replay (Video Walkthrough)

You KarmaBites have no honor if you're willing to bribe people into forfeiting.

Go Ninja Koopas!

btw, I'll be going to the Grand Canyon tomorrow, so if I caused any unknown glitches while setting all this up, it'll be a while before I fix it. I also plan to replace the "Competitions and Tournaments" section on the homepage with a calendar of all the IO events. Lol, the whole thing could just end up being really confusing to everyone...

yep! the idea was mine, and the final result belongs to kro. see, I wanted to have a 6-letter word that is built such that each letter is taken from a teammember's username.

so, Guyguy, kRotomo, soccEr, hArumbai, woodsTock, Shos = GREATS! great idea, isn't it

I mentioned doing something like that in my team, except I always limited myself to the first character of everyone's name. At least then it would be an acronym of all the names. What you did was kinda cheap.

well, none of our teammembers have a vowel as the first letter, make that impossible.
