The 2011 Interguild Olympics have begun! Most of you probably know how this stuff works, but just in case:

How to Play

The IO is that time of year when the Interguild goes crazy and we hold about a dozen competitions at roughly the same time. This year 16 contestants have signed up, and they've all been divided into three teams: The Purple Okapis, The Great Lakes, and Team CSD TEAM Canadianstickdeath, Dekudude, GF4, Krotomo, & Yuggy.

You get points depending on how you rank in each round. All points earned by players will go toward their team's score, and the team with the most points in the end is declared the winner. Furthermore, players may also aim to "win the IO" by having more points than all other players, regardless of teams.

You are allowed to submit the same level into as many rounds that it's compatible with.

Players who have not been assigned to a team may still participate in the IO events.

Team Restrictions

Each team must have at least one entry in every category of the IO, otherwise they will lose points.

There are also some rounds that require the coordination of multiple people (collaboration levels, special team categories, etc.). Fortunately, each team has been given their own secret forum board for discussing strategies and getting stuff done.

Unless otherwise stated, cross-team collaborations are allowed, but the points earned for such entries will be divided among those teams.

Rounds Schedule

Each competition (a.k.a. round or category) will last for a duration of either one, two, three, or four weeks. They will always start on Friday at 12:00 am, and end on some other Friday at 11:59 pm. The exception to this is the final week, where the comps will instead end on the following Sunday at 11:59 pm.

Each week, I or another staff member will post an update saying which rounds are starting, which ones are continuing, and which ones are ending.

Judging

As the rounds end each week, we will try to get them judged as soon as possible. Every week or so we will post Medal Counts so that you can clearly see who's winning and be able to take appropriate action within your teams. The judges this year are: Dando, Isa, and Jazz. Jellsprout will be a backgup judge for the second half of the IO.

The Pentathlon

This is a tournament within a tournament that runs for the entirety of the IO. It's composed of short, 1-week rounds with novel, unconventional challenges. You still earn points for these rounds, but these points also contribute to a Pentathlon ranking. These rankings are purely individual and not based on teams. At the end of the IO, your individual ranking in the Pentathlon can give your team the final boost in points that it needs in order to win.

This Week's New Rounds

IO 2011 Pentathlon Round 1 - Hypocritical "Try Something New"
Duration: One Week: Friday, July 1st --- Friday, July 8th
We had this round last year, so I guess there's really nothing new about it. The requirement is to make a level for a game that you haven't made a level for yet. In other words, try something new.

IO 2011 - Make a Puzzle
Duration: Two Weeks: Friday, July 1st --- Friday, July 15th
It's as simple as it sounds. Just make a puzzle, using whichever game you want. This is different from the usual puzzle comp where you were only allowed to use explicitly puzzle-based games.

IO 2011 - Minecraft Monument
Duration: Three Weeks: Friday, July 1st --- Friday, July 22nd
Here's that Minecraft round that we promised. The theme here is to make something inspired by some kind of Interguild reference. For instance, you might want to make Shos' Playground, or a Karma War Zone, or an HQ for your IO Team. Go crazy with this one.

IO 2011 - Team Collab
Duration: Four Weeks: Friday, July 1st --- Friday, July 29th
Each team must submit exactly one collab level. No more, no less. Try to get as many of your teammates to contribute to this level, but there is no restriction saying that everyone must contribute. If you finish early, you're welcome to submit some cross-team collabs

Stuff like that

1st mentioned on the 2011 IO ideas board, discussed a little bit more in the thread. Btw, is there any different "gimmick" this year?

The IO has so much stuff in it already that it's hard to add more gimmicks to it without bloating it or removing something. But we're currently discussing a special type of round that will likely get released next week. It almost got released this week, but there was some uncertainty as to how it would work.

How do you know which team you're in? I signed up and I'm not sure who I'm going for.

Sorry, I didn't see the link. Thanks.

EDIT: I don't have Minecraft, do I have to buy it for the IO?

no you don't have to. Each team has a good balance of members who play the game, and it's just for one category.

Oh, okay.

Also, do you have to participate in any round you can? Or any tournament you want?

Dude, it's in the post. Your team needs at least 1 entry in every comp or they will be penalized. It doesn't matter who enters somebody on your team just needs to.

Jazz is suspended and I will be going on a vacation for almost a month with only two or three free days and I haven't seen Dando in a long while now...so we need a lot of judges.

I don't think we've ever had an extension within the IO before. I guess since Week 4 is so late, I could extend all comps that should've ended yesterday to today, but that would only help entries that are either finished late or almost finished. It sounds like shos hasn't even started his entry yet..

well yes, the minecraft entry hasn't even been started. but I have to say this, both yaya and me tried to get the game to work, i even registered, but it always pops up some error and fails loading.

anyways, about the speedrun comp we do have an extension, right? *is poor* cuz my last test is tomorrow and I already have my vid ready, just need to edit it.

While that's nice and all, I believe one of your teammates, guyguy, has minecraft, so I don't see how you and Yaya not being able to get minecraft to work is a reason for not getting your minecraft entry done, unless there's some reason why guyguy can't make an entry for you (or on his own), like how I worked with Livio to build a monument in our team's honor.

how comes you answer here but not in our team forum?!?!

anways..you did?
..*looks at the topic*..
well you didn't say anything there, so I assume it was via pms to yaya...

the comp was extended to the 29th, so on tuesday I may be able to understand what minecraft is or how to get it started/solve the error message.. but until then you'll have to work alone, cuz none of the other active teammates seem to have any idea what minecraft is, including me..
