This is something I should have made a long time ago. You know, back when I still made caves and it'd actually be useful to me. Anyway, I posted the link a little below, and I'd appreciate it if you all'd download it, play around with it, and tell me what you think. I don't want you guys to mention any potential new features just yet, I just want to know if you can find any bugs, or anything that doesn't function in the way that you would perhaps expect it to.

http://www.interguild.org/hatpc/cavemaker.zip (EDIT: You cannot trust this link to be remotely up-to-date.)
original link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BNp_r4-qIIZ8QuNE1wRw6Vi9HT526aDL/view

Due to a forum bug, you'll probably have to copy that and paste it into your address bar.

To run that, you'll first have to extract that all into the same folder. If you can't extract zip files, download WinRAR: http://www.win-rar.com/download.html

You'll also need to make sure you have the latest version of Java: http://www.java.com

Inside, there's a file named cavemaker.bat, which you will double-click on the run the program. A cmd window will pop up and hang around with you the whole time as you use the cavemaker. Close it, and you close the cavemaker with it, so, just ignore it for now. If it comes up and then just goes away, then you (probably) have not, either, followed these steps properly, or you do not have the latest version of java on your computer. I'm working on a way to make it stand-alone, but for now this will suffice. Also, you can make a short-cut of the .bat file (right-click create shortcut, probably) and then you can paste that into wherever you'd like to be able to open the cavemaker from. Also note that, since this was coded in java, it should be able to run on systems other than Windows. I haven't seen fungus in a while, but if you see him, direct him here so I can get that straightened out. We might have to jump through a few hoops, but it should be able to run on his mac. Update: The cavemaker program is now in a jar file. You should be able to run it by double clicking but, if not, set java as the default program from opening jar files. The .bat is still there if needed.

If you have Windows 7, check out this short topic for help: http://www.interguild.org/members/forums/topic.php?id=5124

I'm going to attempt to list some of the changes that I've made from the Neopets version. Here's what I could think of, in no particular order:

Spoiler: ''List of Changes from the Neopets Version''

So yeah, try it out, and if there's anything that gets on your nerves, let me know I'll try making changes to it. I'll work on adding new features at an unspecified point in the future. For now, I'd like to ensure that this is working properly and there's nothing about it that people just hate to death.

Sorry bout getting the words jumbled up, but those were the errors I was getting. I went to www.java.com and clicked on the link that said "do I have java?" and the page said, "You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 17). And I also tryed just reinstalling just incase and a window came up saying "you already have this installed would you like to reintstall it?"" This is what I've been typing in my comm. prompt:

cd C:\Users\linmon\Desktop\cavemakerx

Whole C: thing is exactly whats under the properties of the batch file. Then I try to paste in the java phrase from your previous post and I still get the "java is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

Here's an idea that came forth after a little collaboration with the guy sitting next to me. Harumbai could try it too, but I doubt that it'd work for both of you, if it works for anybody at all.

If you're running Vista (not sure about Windows 7), try, right-clicking on the batch file, and clicking "Run As Administrator", and see if that makes a difference. If it still doesn't work, there's a possibility that that was part of the problem, but there's something else the matter as well. Try that procedure from before again, but when opening command prompt, instead of clicking on it to open it, right-click it and then click "Run As Administrator". Then, follow the procedure, and see if it still tells you that java is invalid, or if maybe it instead tells you something else.

Do you use Windows XP? After setting the Cavemaker file to Windows XP Service Pack 3 compatibality mode, I got the same problem as you. I don't know if this is possible in XP, but you could try running the Cavemaker in compatibility mode for Windows 2000 to fix this.
To do this, right-click the .bat file and go to Properties. Next go to the Compatibility tab and mark "Run this application in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows 2000 from the drop-down list. I hope this works.

That's weird, 'cause I use an XP at school to run the cavemaker, no problems, but if it works, then... yay? I just tried SP2 compat mode, and no problems there...

I tried it in every compatibility mode and without compatibility mode (Windows 7), and it works on every mode except 95, 98/ME, XP Service Pack 2 and XP Service Pack 3.

Hmm, it just occurred to me that, when I "tested" it in XP, it was compiled and run using an older version of java (I had to comment out 2-3 insignificant lines of code to get it to work), because I didn't want the hassle of temporarily installing a newer version on a lab computer.

Anyway...

OK, Yaya, this is going to work. Guaranteed (maybe). Try copy/pasting the contents (not the whole folder) of the cavemaker folder into java's bin folder (C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\, probably). Then, if you double-click Cavemaker.bat from inside the bin folder, it should work. Feel free to make a shortcut (right-click/create-shortcut) and copy/paste the shortcut to where-ever you'd like to be able to run the cavemaker from.

I think I found a solution on the internet, to get it to work as-is, but it's a little complicated.

Ok, this may sound stupid, but I don't think I have a java bin folder? My computer said such a folder doesn't exist.

Huh? Why would it say that? I don't mean to use the command prompt or anything. Just, use windows explorer. Like, from the desktop, click my computer, click C, click program files, click java, click jre6 (or something like that), click bin. Paste the contents of your cavemaker file into here. Double-click the .bat file. Tada!

I'm not a genius. Google search is. I did some searching, and I found a solution to the problem that was a lot more complicated than trying just pasting the cavemaker into the bin folder. The problem is that, though java exists on your computer, you computer has no idea where it is. By putting the cavemaker into the same folder as java, it can find both the cavemaker and java simultaneously. I should have thought of that myself, but I guess, since nobody else had this problem, I wouldn't know why only you would have.

If you don't like having the cavemaker housed within java's bin folder, and would rather keep in, say, your documents, or something, there's instructions on how to do that here (link is really long):
Link (Use URL tag in those cases /Isa)
By following these steps, you computer will be able to locate java no matter where you try to access it from.

Harumbai, your error is different, but you know what, you might as well try the same thing that's worked for Yaya. Paste the contents of the cavemaker folder into the bin folder, and try opening the batch file from there.

Yeah I tried that before yaya's positive response and on not having any more success I moved it somewhere else again. I can post a screenshot of the cavemaker folder if you want to see what's in it, but I have had it work on another computer and both times I right clicked on the zipped file and clicked extract all and then installed java. The only thing that happened differently on each computer is that it doesn't work on this computer while it does on the other one.

I'd guess I'd like to see the screenshot, just so I can rule out the usual suspect, and start looking for something else.

Well, the cavemaker has been working great since I've started using it,  but lately I've been having this problem where if I try to change a tile that already has something in it, a random tile may become non-responsive.

Ex: When I tried to change a down arrow to a left arrow, I clicked on the left arrow button multiple times, but nothing happend, when I tried making it a boulder, dynamite, gem or bird, they all worked fine, but I still couldn't do a left arrow. After hanging around for 3 minutes, I tried it again and it worked. It's not always a left arrow, this problem has happen with several different tiles for me.

Is this my computer or is there a way to fix this?

lolwut?

Maybe you're just not double-clicking it right? I've noticed that sometimes you have to be somewhat precise with your clicking? Next time it happens, try clicking on the tile in the tile select bar and pressing insert, to see if that will set the tile. If it in fact doesn't set, also try using alt+shirt+comma (for the left arrow, in your example) to see if that will set left arrows.

'In the chatbox, I' said:
when you roll over a tile it gives you its coordinates, but it's in (y,x) format, rather than (x,y). That's pretty lame

Yeah, I know. It's giving you (row, column), which I think is standard for a table? I honestly have no idea, lol.

I don't know. On my TI-84 graphic calculator, PointOn is in (x,y) format, while PixelOn is in (y,x) format. I think it is a difference between mathematicians and computer scientists.

suggestion: instead of view cave code and then having options of cancel and copy, why not have simply a copy cavecode function? i mean, why else would you look at the cavecode?

At least you don't have to click BOTH select all and copy.

I'm probably not going to do that. I mean, I still want to be able to view the text (maybe that way you'd notice that you have the add terrain border option set wrong, or something, before you paste it into the upload page?), and there are enough poorly-named menu options already...

You could make a shortcut to copy the code, and whenever you click on it, the code box opens for an entire second before automatically closing again?

Also, I'm probably wrong, but the Level Properties shouldn't be under File?

yeah, I always think of going Edit > Level Properties, but then I realize that it's under File.

I also think that a good way to improve on the user interface is to put buttons on the right side that open up the Level Properties, Cave Code text, and maybe an Options button where you can edit everything under the Options tab in one dialogue box.

Or maybe you should focus on adding actual content, like an automatic uploader glitch detector, so that it'll warn you immediately if you put down two opposite-facing arrows on the same line
