IO 2010 - Tennis (Collaborative Levels)

Authors: canadianstickdeath, Dekudude
Game: Zelda Classic
Date: Saturday, August 7, 2010 - 9:55 pm

Part of the Series: A Moment in Time

Description:
Made with ZC 2.5 Build 1281. Head over to www.shardstorm.com and download build 1281 or later. I would recommend using build 1281, for guaranteed compatibility. If you have any trouble getting he quest started, let me know, and I should be able to help you.

The is the KarmaBites entry into the collaborative level comp for the IO 2010. The dungeon layout was made by canadianstickdeath, while the music was scored by Dekudude. The completely temporary overworld screen exists only so that the side warp out of the dungeon can link to a place that can link you back into the dungeon, and should not be considered part of the submission.

Dekudude finds this level too hard, and you might too. You have to consider that this would be the 7th dungeon in my quest, tentatively titled "A Moment in Time", and, by this point in the game, you should be significantly better than just jumping into the game a level 7. Think, Guitar Hero, and the first time you played, if you just jump straight into Expert, how badly you're going to fail. Be thankful that you can at least make some headway. But, if it's still all too much, there is a cheat code that will allow you to refill your health, magic, etc. Enter "Eyes Yuks Ohm Hutch" in the cheats menu, to activate the cheat. It is imperative that you do not use this cheat to break the level. The level uses damage combos and your limited magic to prevent progress, so the health and magic refills could easily be used to cheat.

Continued in first post.

I have commandeered shos' post, and it is now being used to extend my level description.

Dekudude thinks that a list of items/enemies would be helpful to those playing the quest, and I guess I agree with him. Here goes:

-Notable Items-

Boomerang: Use this as your primary secondary weapon, to stun all enemies before attacking them. After stunning them and giving them a few hits, stun them again, so they can remain stunned.

Hookshot: You can also use this item to stun enemies -- even some that cannot be stunned by the boomerang. It has a disadvantage that, after you use it, you can't move until it fully retracts, but this also works as a bonus because, the whole time you are using the hookshot, you are invulnerable. If you are in the midst of a large swarm of enemies, consider using it and hoping the enemies clear before it retracts. You also will have to use it to grab onto certain blocks in this dungeon, pulling yourself across gaps.

Wand: The wand can be used to damage enemies, but at the cost of magic. The main use of the wand in this dungeon is, at one point, you will need to trigger a switch by reflecting its magic off a mirror.

Bombs: There are (surprisingly) no bombable walls in this dungeon, however, there are some enemies that can only be defeated by slipping bombs into their mouths. If you use a super bomb, those enemies will die with a single bomb, and will always drop a super bomb when they die.

Spoiler:

-Notable Enemies-

Fire Zol: The enemies are the ones that Deku find particularly annoying. The trick is to kill them without giving them knockback. If they get knocked back, they'll probably end up protected their fire trail and will reform before they can be tracked down. Hit them from the side, and then slash again right after to kill the kids before they can go anywhere.

Like Like: These guys steal your shield if you get swallowed by one, which makes you incapable of blocking the Zora fileballs. There is a shop to buy one from, but it's expensive, and really far in. Normally there'd be a more convenient place on the overworld to purchase one from. The zora's are pretty annoying without the shield, but it shouldn't be QUITE as devastating to lose your shield in this dungeon. Also, be sure not to get swallowed by a Like Like while using Nayru's. While your free yourself from the Like Like, you will waste your invincibility, and you may not have enough time to finish crossing the lava.

Fire Wizrobe: These guys can only be stunned by the hookshot. While stunned, they cannot shoot fire, to try to keep them stunned as much as possible.

I've had this level ready for almost two days now. Dekudude hasn't had much of a chance to play it yet, and I haven't had a chance to implement any of his suggestions; I may update it in the near future. I dunno what the judges are up to (it'd be my guess that they've made zero progress), but I... don't want to keep them waiting any longer?

Hey guys: I'd just like to give an extra round of applause to canadianstickdeath for his work on this level. He did the majority of the work by far, and I think deserves special recognition. *claps*

Lol, you haven't even finished the level yet. For all you know, it sucks. If you're still playing, lemme know how your progressing or if you're stuck or anything.

BTW, we have this:

Also, IDK if you should expect many comments on this level, lol. The last two levels I made for this actually have the most replies of any levels, but most of them were silver and DBK, neither of which are still around. Not many people around here play this game? They should, though. I'm looking at YOU, most everybody. It can seem a little complicated at first, but it's really not so bad once you get the hang of it. You also have me to help you, I mean, really.

Meh, I'm just working on levels in a completely random order, lol. I make a dungeon, and I don't really decide on the approximate level number until about half way through. Traditionally, ZC quests go from levels 1-9 with maybe a side dungeon or two.

I just recorded a video of this. The raw clip is 14:26, which is short enough for a single YouTube video, now they they allow up to 15 minutes. I'll upload it some time next week.

Error loading Level_7.qst:
Invalid quest file

I've downloaded it again, and even moved it to different locations but I still get this error.

I'm guessing you don't have the latest version of Zelda Classic. It works fine for me.

Yeah, if you read the description you'll see this was made with build 1281. Previous submissions used build 700-something.

When I saw that, I remember that you wrote almost the same thing in your other levels, and I thought "I already have ZC so I don't need to read this". lol

anyway, this is pretty cool so far, but the enemies sure are evil.

In this video I just recorded, I tear through them like butter. Actually, at one point, I embarrassingly get my shield stolen by a Like Like, lol, but other than that, I find the dungeon... too easy for level 7. But I guess I had you guys a little bit in mind, and didn't go nearly as far as I could have.

man this is crazy.

Well, I got the weird thing that lets me turn into a ball and get into lava without getting hurt for a limited time.

Lol, cool. You're making progress. I'd say you're at about 1/3 done. The next third is the toughest part. If you thought it was crazy now....

Lemme know if you can't figure out what to do, k?

Spoiler:

Sorry about not being clear about that door that returns you to the start. I needed a way to get the player back from there if they get themselves stuck, and I couldn't find a good way to do that. If there were, like, and exit sign tile in my tile-set, I would have used it, lol. Actually, I might look into that. Later on, there is another door that warps you back to the beginning. You can recognize those doors by the fact that they are not aligned with the edge of the screen. As well, I think it would have been a good idea to put some arrows on the ground, say, to show where to go, but again, the tile-set that I was using didn't have any, but again, it's something that I'm probably going to look into eventually.

I made it to the room that was filled with the exploding fire wizards, but ultimately died. Also, a like like stole my sheild! man I hate those things... At one point I tried doing the cheat code, but I just couldn't seem to type it in correctly. Couldn't you have made the cheat code something like "cheatcode"?

but complaining aside, I'm really enjoying this level.

And now that I've fully read the description that's cool how Deku made the music. I thought it was pretty good.

"At one point I tried doing the cheat code, but I just couldn't seem to type it in correctly."
Eyes Yuks Ohm Hutch
Like that. Case sensitive, with spaces. That cheat code, when read quickly, sounds like "I Suck So Much", which supposedly a deterrent to keep you from using it.

"I made it to the room that was filled with the exploding fire wizards, but ultimately died."
That's one of the hardest rooms in the dungeon. There are a couple of tricks that might be helpful. For one, you should try to get there after taking as little damage as possible, lol, obviously. Second, remember that the hookshot can stun the fire wizrobes, and while they are stunned, they cannot attack. Also, if you get really lucky, one of them might drop magic when they die, and you could possibly get another use of Nayru's out of it. Also, in order to get to this room, you need to buy magic for 20 rupees, so hopefully you don't run out, lol. If you do, I give you permission to refill your rupees using the cheat, with no hit to your honour, but if you do, you must not use said rupees on anything but the magic.

"Also, a like like stole my sheild!"
Most annoying enemies in all of LoZ. The wallmasters give it a run for it's money though... In the video that I just recorded, a Like Like stole my shield too, lol, and at my next encounter with a Zora, I just let a fireball hit me, lol, and I did a mini freak-out, after. You'll just have to remember to avoid the fireballs from now on, rather than just pointing toward them. But! There's a few chests worth of rupees in this level, and if you get them, you might be able to afford a shield from the shop where you refill your magic?

"but complaining aside, I'm really enjoying this level."
That's good. I was afraid that the stuff with the Nayru's Love could end up being too frustrating. Good luck on the Wizrobes. After you beat them, you're hope free....
