Game: Hannah and the Pirate Caves
Date: Sunday, September 2, 2007 - 12:00 am

Description:
Originally made for a challenge to see how many treasures you could get before dying, this cave lead to the discovery of the regeneration glitch. It's tons of fun and full of boulder-glitched randomness.

Great
I can.

As fun of a cave as this is, I don't think it's worth a 10/10. I mean, just look at it's map; it's a bunch of boulders.

Also, this cave can be very cruel, some times, not allowing you access to the door or something. falling 1 treasure short...

...or, this is a very fun cave despite it's not-so-awsome-looking design, and this cave can be very kind, some times, giving you a few EXTRA treasures, lives or gems ;-)

why do you always have to be so pessimistic, Georgia? are you disappointed that the Russians beat you with one hundredth of their army?

Pessimistic would be a 5/10. You see, shos, this is why you fail at life.

I agree with quirvy - I never expected it to be rated higher than five as I don't believe that caves should be rated purely on their enjoyment levels. But this is easily one of the most fun caves out there - well, for me it is...

The most enjoyable level there is out there, and the one spawning the most walkthroughs, even beating Whoops!.

Meh
I've never really cared for this cave. It was good for a laugh for a couple of minutes, I guess, but after you play it a few times, the novelty wears off.

3.4/5 — Challenging
come on, it's not so hard
now, remember what i told you after your last post?...i'll forgive you this time, cuz this cave - you really have nothing to say about it. but next time, remember what i said.

another thing, this topic has been dead for a looong time. reviving such topics is called necroposting, and usually it's unaccepted. please read the rules of the interguild.

and if i already post...then a 3.4 would suit.

Trying it now.

EDIT: remarkably similar. Though getting both characters to the door must be virtually impossible.

lol, this is great. I'm totally gonna test my boulder physics on this once I get cascading working.

Of course, it's not gonna behave exactly the same, but it'll be a good way to see how glitchy my boulder physics is.

DroidFreak are your boulder rules deterministic?

Yes, at least in the current version. If given a choice between cascading left and right, they pick the last direction they rolled in if possible, and if they haven't rolled at all yet, they default to rolling left. I believe that mimics HATPC's behavior according to someone on the IG.

What would happen here:

xo ox
xobox

Upon destruction of the box?

Upon block destruction, the following cascade checks are made in order:

The tile directly to the left of the destroyed tile.
The tile directly to the right of the destroyed tile.
The tile above and to the left of the destroyed tile.
The tile above and to the right of the destroyed tile.

The first check that succeeds (and any subsequent checks that also succeed) start boulders rolling, and once a boulder is rolling the place it's rolling to is considered occupied so no subsequent checks will roll boulders into the same spot.

So in your case, shos, the boulder above and to the left would cascade first and only after it fell past would the boulder on the right follow. Things get a little more interesting if you have two rows of boulders that can both cascade, like this:
Code:
xo ox
xobox
xo ox
xx xx

In that case, both of the boulders to the left would probably roll to the right at once. Which is... interesting.

A few things to note though:

(1) That order is specifically for block destruction. Other sources of cascade checks may or may not use similar priorities.
(2) That boulder physics was the the result of a fair bit of tweaking to try to get it to feel right and act right on a large scale.
(3) It's entirely possible that the boulder physics (and many other aspects of the physics) will change slightly in the next update, since the core engine will be different, and I may tweak the behavior in the future as well.

I'll probably make the whole source code available at some point, although it's only really useful if you have GameMaker (Specicially, GameMaker: Studio 2 for the version I'm working on now), and it's a bit arcane (although less so in the new version thanks to the enums). In the meantime, I'm happy to answer any questions about it.
