Description:
*reveals self from shadows*

My second N level ever. This one will probably be my last, or at least my 3rd won't be made a week after this one. I've been playing a lot more of the in-game levels to understand the game's mechanics better, and tried to at least know what every object in the editor did before making a level this time. Side note, let me tell you about the N in-game levels; those stop being fun pretty quickly.

This is definitely more complex than my first N level, which in turn makes it somewhat more difficult. I tried to make it a balanced difficult, I finished the level like at 10:30 last time, the rest of the time I just spent tweaking things to make the level more bearable. Comparing this level to previous, you can still tell that I do like some objects more than others, but I tried to include more ideas and variation.

N venting time. The level is possible, I have beaten it. In editing mode. Which does not save a recording of your attempt. You have to publish your level and then beat it to do that. And also there is no time limit while testing it in edit mode, which is a pain because you can't really make levels time sensitive without knowing how you're doing on time. Hence, why I spammed gold in a couple places, in order to make sure you wouldn't have to worry about time. While the level isn't crazy difficult, I don't really wish to beat it again for a recording this soon, maybe some crazy ninja master will beat it for me. I know the level is possible, there's a great chance it's cheatable since it has more moving parts per se, so let me know if you (probably Isa) can beat it without using all the collectible objects or visiting every area.

Word of advice to other people who have made N levels, I think it'd be a good idea to reupload some your levels into the game's database so then you could consolidate the confusing level uploading process into only posting a link. Just a thought. Enjoy.

EDIT: Replay is up! Have fun watching. Same steps as before in case you need help: Open N on Interguild, press "Play Online" on page that comes up, press "Levels" on game page, press "User Levels" in top right corner. Okay since the level gallery is built into the game in the new version, you can either just search for my level using the title option "Paint By Ninja" or search by authors with the name "NoComment"

Started at 00.56
Got to top row at 01:00
Noted that I have to leave the floor so that the watch dog is locked in by the trap door

Will continue until I beat it.

01:04 - made it to pillow room.
01:09 - made it there again, died, analyzed.
01:13 - beat it!

OK, I looked at your playthrough now and now I feel dumb for waiting an extra session during the start. Will replay to catch high score.

Final edit: Beat it, and barely took the #1 spot with 3160 points over your 3107.
Do I get style points for locking in the seeker with the rocket?

This is a step forward compared to your latest level.

While the design is actually fairly ugly (blocky/rounded/sloped blocks mixed), the concept is neat. I got fooled during my first runthrough, believing that I had to get down to the floor and jump above the watch dog for 30 seconds until my elevator arrived, but it's not too bad, and I enjoyed the level more once I realized I didn't have to do that.

Knowing that I don't have to fight for survival in a cramped space took away the difficulty though - I made it more entertaining for me by speeding up the start, which also made it more difficult. In that sense, this level has a bit for everyone...which I like. During the writing of this rating I replayed the level, aiming for a speedrun, and got a much higher score than previously. I raised my score a tad to reflect this.
(on that note - this is what gold is used for usually. Those who want a better score has to take a bigger challenge by taking dangerous side paths filled with gold.)

You could improve this level by making better use of the weapons instead of just disabling them. The only weapon you really notice is the initial machine gun, but that one travels outside of the game after its initial rounds of firing. You could also spice up the pillow room, making us use the top section more - maybe by sprinkling gold?

I think you qualify as "a crazy ninja master". The thought of someone jumping up the thwumps in the first room when they're initially descending instead of riding them down to the floor then going back up occurred to me; I tried to see if it was possible. I couldn't do it, so I figured it was impossible or not easily executed by the average player at least. I'm okay with it.

I'll keep the use of gold in mind for future endeavors, maybe the average N level is beatable in under 90 seconds and I was just being overly cautious. I wanted to work in something more complicated than the blue guys, hence the machine gun. It was either going to be that or the laser. Both are extremely annoying to continually avoid though, so I first tried to find a situation where the machine gun was unable to move, but could still fire on you, which was possible but not very effective. Then I thought I could just confine it to a small area, but there's no particularly small room in the level, and it would probably eventually wander into a larger area. So I tried it out in the starting room, and it magically moves into the wall after firing it's first shot problem solved. I think the machine guns/lasers would be very interesting to use, I'll just have to find a situation where they aren't deathly frustrating.

The pillow room was the first area I had in mind for the level, but I unfortunately imagined it being bigger than I was able to make it. I felt with the size it was at and the handicapped player movement, I couldn't put much in there to interact with. I do see what you mean by the emptiness, though.

When I think of weapons in the game I see their primary function as to kill you, which can be prevented by a.) avoiding them b.) disabling them. I feel like there's not much wiggle room there, I'll have to mess around and see if I get any good ideas.

The ugliness doesn't particularly bother me. Ninjas must be trained to fight in all types of environments-- I mean, I guess it's like my thoughts on HATPC level design where it's cool if a cave is visually pleasing or consistent, but the lack of such doesn't detract from the experience. Thanks for the review. You currently have the top score on my level!
