I was just quoting my past thoughts to support Quirvy's current ones. No one is stopping anyone from starting it. Yes, you! *points off into distance*

I might start it soon. How wide should the canals be? And should there be sidewalks or something to the sides of the canals?

I imagine the canals should be pretty wide, as well as the sidewalks.
(Can't wait for the boat races) |

I'd say at least ten meters wide. We're going largely for function here (boat race!), so we're not going to have a bunch of annoyingly small canals that break your boat every time you try to use them.
Kro and I are going to start working on this soon, we will decide on a date to start off on sometime and anyone who wants to join us then can!

Yeah, 1 block = 1 meter. I dunno exactly how wide it should be, but 10-ish blocks roughly is good.

I've been on pretty often lately. This would be cool to work on

Before we think about building this, we should probably think of the general look of the city. Do we want it to have an old style or an industrial port city, or something completely different? (Of course, a lot of this was previously stated, but we still need to go over it a little more.)
This is something we should be able to come up with on this topic, and something we need to come up with before the creation.
Personally, I would like to have a city with wide canals and plenty of sidewalk space, with old-ish styled buildings and a large port/dock area. (Imagine Riften from Skyrim for the part of the city next to the water) |

Should the sidewalks be a few blocks above the canals?

Haha, I totally had a Riften-esque city in mind too. I'd be fine with wide canals and old-ish style buildings. Wide canals would be ideal for boat races. I also think it'd be cool to have maybe a decrepit and older corner/area of the city; smaller and less uniform canals, maybe a few rundown buildings. Just a suggestion; it doesn't have to be too big, but I think it'd give the city some character. What do you think the primary material for the city should be? If you look at Riften for example, it's primarily made of wood, but if you look at an IRL place like Venice, it's mostly stone.

I agree with Yaya. A run-down area of the city would be really cool. I think different parts of the city should be made out of different materials. Maybe wood for the port area, and stone for the main city area? |

The docks should definitely be wooden. For the canals and the sidewalks I was thinking the canals would be 11 wide and 3 deep, and the sidewalks would be 3 blocks above the water level. And I like the idea of a dilapidated part of the city. Should the buildings just be a little run-down or should some of them be abandoned?

I set a warp at the location of the city so that I wouldn't have to type in all the coordinates all the time. The warp is canal_city.

And what elevation should the canals be at? Should they be at sea level?

Haha, yeah a Riften-like city sounds great. I'm pretty sure that Venice was initially made of wood, but then stone stuff was built on top of that, so if we're going for an older feel, wood should be used primarily. Wood for the docks and other water-related stuff; stone for the rest of the city sounds good.

I think the canals should be at various heights so that we can have a dam/waterfall or two to keep things interesting. |

So I started doing a canal to get a feel of how I want it to look. I came up with this. Tell me what you like and don't like about it.

but in all honesty, i didn't think there were going to be locks. i thought it was going to be like something in venice, where the canals are at sea level. maybe one part of the city could be below the sea level, obviously diked. |
