Time to delve into a bit of Minecraft theory for a bit...
How can one make a building/project feel worthwhie?
I mean, on survival, any sort of structure can serve as a source of *insert item here*, a place to store items, sleep, take shelter, etc. On creative, things can either be gimmicks or visually appealing
Exploring is fun, but it's difficult to prescribe purpose to anything you build. The game is too open ended for that. It can be satisfying to just build cool stuff sometimes, but then you might ask yourself halfway through "what is the point of building this?"
Sorry if this is too much pretentiousness in your Minecraft. It's not like these things started being a problem for me today, but I've been thinking about new projects to begin, and I'm having trouble finding a reason to actually start them

thats why i explore caves instead of building things. it's exciting and you dont know what youll find. its like a very long and grindy lottery ticket that will always give you more than you bought it for

Only if your pickaxes don't break first. Every time I go spelunking at least 2 out of my 3 pickaxes break and I have to smelt the iron I dug up in order to make another.
Yeah but exploring caves can only be fun for so long before they all start to feel roughly the same. The hunt for diamonds is always fun, though.
Of course it's still more fun than farming materials to build things from. What really chugged me along when it came to building stuff was the satisfaction from seeing progress being made on whatever I was building.

For me, it's about a sense of completion, I suppose. Advancement. When I build something, I have it in my mind not only that I'm doing this for myself—because it's fun—but because it contributes to the atmosphere of the server as a whole. That's partially why I've spent so much time cleaning up Spawn City over the years. It feels good to add onto something greater than ourselves. Cheesy as it may sound, I've always found that a mentality of "making the server really awesome" is a good way to get motivated to finish things.

In case anyone is looking for some activity as an excuse to come on the server, I've started a new project on creative. Can't promise I'll be on everyday... or most days I guess, but don't assume the server is always empty. That being said, don't teleport to me in the midst of my partially built creation. Looking at you... people who have teleported to me in the midst of my partially built creations

A couple of years ago, I started working on a calculator that would work using redstone. After many months' progress, I had a brilliant new idea to solve all the problems I was having with it. So I demolished everything I'd built and started on my new idea. I just realized about 10 minutes ago that that new idea was just a less efficient, more complicated and space-consuming way of doing what I'd been doing in the first place and that I've wasted a year and a half of effort.

I was just on the server, working on a building. I made some progress on it, then flew over to a nearby area, and when I flew back, all of the changes I'd made had been completely undone. Not just the things I'd done with WorldEdit, but the things that I changed by hand as well. I then redid a few things, then disconnected from the server and then rejoined, and the things I redid were undone. What is causing this and how can it be fixed?

I don't know which exact update did this, but it seems that the newest version of the game (1.12.2) makes you hop on top of a block when you walk towards it. I despise this feature. It ruins my perfectly-timed jumps and prevents me from walking directly up to a short wall. How about we just stick to 1.9.2, eh?

I've come to realize that our (survival) server isn't really much fun anymore not because Minecraft isn't fun anymore, but because our server is really stale and it feels like there's nothing left to do that's really any fun. Restarting the server would obvious make it more fun again, but then you can't really do it because you have so much stuff that's been built on the existing server that it would feel wrong to start anew.
Also feel like there isn't/wasn't enough of people working together towards common goals, which is part what really makes the experience fun, both because you're doing things with other people, and also because it makes tasks that would otherwise be too ambitious and take too long, much shorter and palatable.
It also doesn't help that we're constantly like 3-5 versions behind
One thing that my brother and I thought of doing was just making a second "spawn" somewhere really far off in survival, and then we wouldn't bring any materials over there.
Admittedly, I haven't gone on Interserver in a super long time, probably since December.

I would be all for starting over again on a new world, to be honest. Of course, I haven't gone on survival in a very long, so obviously I might not be that attached to what I've built, but that's also mainly motivated by there being too little to do on an already very built up world. Maybe Livio could upload the current world file on a file sharing website, so people could download the map and still have their builds?

Maybe we should make it a goal to establish a close community ingame, rather than spreading out.

I don't like the idea of starting over again. Aside from losing all our progress, would it actually encourage activity? Maybe for a short period, but not for long. We'd just build another spawn plaza, explore some more caves, Quirvy would build another hotel, Kro would build a chicken farm, Soccer would build some more item farms, everyone else would build a house or two, and then the server would be in exactly the same state that it's in right now.
Also, we did restart the survival world a couple of years ago, and while that did bring about a bit more activity it clearly wasn't permanent. Restarting doesn't seem to have cured inactivity in the past, so I doubt it will do us much good now. Going off into the middle of nowhere with no items sounds like a good idea to me; those of you who would only be invigorated by a restart would be able to start again, while people's current creations would remain intact and accessible.
If we do restart the survival world I would be in favor of uploading the old one to a file-sharing site as Kro suggested.

I haven't personally invested that much time into the Survival server so I wouldn't really be bothered by a reset. Agree with Kro about establishing a closer community in-game.

That's exactly what I was saying was part of the problem; we don't have enough people who are actually coordinating and doing things together; in the past it's all been about each person doing their own thing more or less instead of people working towards similar goal. When people do their own thing, they don't work with others, and they lose motivation because it seems like nobody else is actually seeing or appreciating their hard work, and it takes longer, and it's less interesting because they're pretty much doing it by themselves. That's what went wrong with the interserver IMO. Too much of people doing things on their own to try to impress other members instead of members collaborating to do things together.
I'll also say I'm not saying that restarting the world is the answer to our problems just that:
1. Our current world has gotten stale - There's nothing left to explore, which is what made it so exciting when we restarted the server
2. We don't work together enough and that makes it less fun to go on the server, because it's essentially like going on single player except you've already been there enough that it's boring
3. We're always really far behind the newest minecraft versions which just makes it worse because there are other cool things out there that we don't get to experience because we're always waiting for bukkit or whatever to update their plugins to only be 2 behind whatever is currently out there
But the bottom line is that the current server experience is pretty abysmal. Nobody would ever really want to come online because:
1. There's nothing for them to explore that hasn't already been explored
2. Nobody else comes online because it doesn't seem like there are any reasons for them to come online
Does that mean that we should restart the server? Not necessarily, but I'm still calling it out as why our server sucks right now. If we restarted our server again, I think long term we would end up with less on our server than we do have now. Then again, does that matter as long as people are playing more on the server than then now? IDK but our server still does kinda suck right now and there's not much incentive for anybody to go back on and play on it.

Yes, the server is very out of date: we're still on 1.9.2 if I'm not mistaken, while the latest release is something like 1.12. I don't know how much work it would be to update but if it would take a lot of effort then I don't think it's imperative to update. It certainly would be nice to be able to use the newest features on the server, though.

Wiki says the current version is 1.12.2, yeah. 1.9.2 was released just over two years ago now (March 30, 2016) so we are getting kinda behind the times. I haven't been keeping up with the releases at all so I have absolutely no idea what's even been added (some weird purple plant and ocean dungeons?).

I think I've been locked out of my Minecraft account. It's an old legacy account so I can't reset the password, I have to migrate it to a Mojang.com account first. And to do that, I need to get proof of purchase via a PayPal transaction ID from 10 years ago (from an account that isn't mine). What a strange system.
