I'm about to start implementing water in HATPC Reborn and the first step of that is figuring out how it works in HATPC. Any details you can give me about how HATPC water (or swimming) works would be helpful.

An interesting but very glitchy mechanic. Rising water will randomly just pass through walls (bug).
You move slower horizontally while swimming, unless you jump while swimming in which case you start moving at running speed (bug?). Swimming down is slow. Swimming up is fast. Not pressing any movement keys while underwater will cause you to slowly float up (annoying).
You can get stuck in corners if you swim into them, which will either let you pass through walls or get you stuck in them with no way out (bug).
Rising water comes from water tap tiles. Water levels of still water are set by the water level tile. Water fills up every tile except terrain (unless glitch), secret areas (unless glitch), and air pockets (rising water can fill up air pockets in some cases). Water crates will cause some water to come out of every water tap. Water tap crates, if present in the level, will keep water from coming out of all water taps until it is broken. Breaking a water crate will still cause the water level to rise even if there is a water tap crate present in the level. If the water from a water tap falls out of the level through a hole in the bottom, that water tap will stop. This will also happen if the water stream falls into a water drain.
Crates underwater will fall slower than crates that are not underwater. If a crate below a boulder is broken and the boulder falls one tile onto a platform, the boulder will not break the platform. This only works underwater. However, if the boulder is pushed and falls one tile on the platform, the boulder will break the platform. | | canadianstickdeath |

Kro covered most of the little weird that I was gonna cover...
"You can get stuck in corners if you swim into them" - only occurs with the faster swimming speed.
Rising water filling air pockets probably needs an "unless glitch" too. You need the tap to be in a filling up through terrain case for it to happen, I think? In any case I think you should fix the bug and have the tap stop once the room is full.
You can stand up while inside a crawl space if you let go of down and let momentum carry you to the ground. You can use that to dislodge a boulder I guess.
Duck-swimming is a thing. You can use it to get inside a crawlspace with that's not filled with water.
Even if you jump from the ground, you jump with the lower water jump height if the tile you're standing on is below water level.

Ill add that when you are at the surface, floating, your air supply goes down slower. As utilized in imperio, lol, if you hold up at surface you air supply can be muuuuch longer without breathing. Notw that if you get to the surface with a too large ulwarda velocity, you will bounce alittle outside of the water and breath/die by spikes outside etc.
Arrows move in water in the same speed as outside, same goes for dynamite.

Whether or not this needs to be implemented...
If you're standing on top of a crate also occupied with water, standing upright will not lose air; crawling will.

true^^^, and when you stand upright it will not do the breathing for you, i.e., you can stay endlessly with say 1 bubble until you jump.

You'll only move at running speed if you jump from the ground. If you just jump while swimming you'll get a little boost upwards

You'll move faster no matter where you jump as long as the ducking state doesn't override it. | | aych bee |

you sirs are evidently quite knowledgeable about swimming ... i say we can expect the interguild, as a team, to win olympic gold in water polo in tokyo 2020

The Interguild is totally a nation worthy of competing in the Olympics. Whether or not you need to be on the ground to get the jump swimming boost, I don't think I'll implement that speed boost in HATPCR because it doesn't really make sense. I'll probably make the fast swimming speed the speed that you always have.
