This is something I should have made a long time ago. You know, back when I still made caves and it'd actually be useful to me. Anyway, I posted the link a little below, and I'd appreciate it if you all'd download it, play around with it, and tell me what you think. I don't want you guys to mention any potential new features just yet, I just want to know if you can find any bugs, or anything that doesn't function in the way that you would perhaps expect it to.

http://www.interguild.org/hatpc/cavemaker.zip (EDIT: You cannot trust this link to be remotely up-to-date.)
original link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BNp_r4-qIIZ8QuNE1wRw6Vi9HT526aDL/view

Due to a forum bug, you'll probably have to copy that and paste it into your address bar.

To run that, you'll first have to extract that all into the same folder. If you can't extract zip files, download WinRAR: http://www.win-rar.com/download.html

You'll also need to make sure you have the latest version of Java: http://www.java.com

Inside, there's a file named cavemaker.bat, which you will double-click on the run the program. A cmd window will pop up and hang around with you the whole time as you use the cavemaker. Close it, and you close the cavemaker with it, so, just ignore it for now. If it comes up and then just goes away, then you (probably) have not, either, followed these steps properly, or you do not have the latest version of java on your computer. I'm working on a way to make it stand-alone, but for now this will suffice. Also, you can make a short-cut of the .bat file (right-click create shortcut, probably) and then you can paste that into wherever you'd like to be able to open the cavemaker from. Also note that, since this was coded in java, it should be able to run on systems other than Windows. I haven't seen fungus in a while, but if you see him, direct him here so I can get that straightened out. We might have to jump through a few hoops, but it should be able to run on his mac. Update: The cavemaker program is now in a jar file. You should be able to run it by double clicking but, if not, set java as the default program from opening jar files. The .bat is still there if needed.

If you have Windows 7, check out this short topic for help: http://www.interguild.org/members/forums/topic.php?id=5124

I'm going to attempt to list some of the changes that I've made from the Neopets version. Here's what I could think of, in no particular order:

Spoiler: ''List of Changes from the Neopets Version''

So yeah, try it out, and if there's anything that gets on your nerves, let me know I'll try making changes to it. I'll work on adding new features at an unspecified point in the future. For now, I'd like to ensure that this is working properly and there's nothing about it that people just hate to death.

I mean, if you explicitly write that you should download it...what's the issue, really.

I am making the assumption that alvetonis doesn't know how to extract a .zip.

CSD did not endorse it, and I frankly thought that the question asked was remarkably stupid, given that instructions were simple.
1. Download WinRAR
2. Done!

I don't really want to spend $30 (About €23.55) for WinRar; I'm short of money as it is.

My current balance: $9.49 (About €7.44)

Is there any way so could get a different program, or maybe WinRar for free?

...okay, we'll do it this way.

Don't download WinRAR.
Right-click on the cavemaker.zip file.
Choose Extract files (or something similar, I can't remember the exact phrase since I run Swedish Windows), possibly "Extract here".
Follow the steps in the guide that appears.
Done.

I think WinRar is actually free: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
It says it's only a trial version, but I've never been forced to pay for the full version. I'm not even sure what the difference is between the two versions.

Also, I've updated the interguild link.

Wait, did the IG still not have the working cavemaker link on the site? The same exact problem I had four years ago upon joining?

I don't think you guys get it... (except Isa). Windows has a way to extract ZIP files built right into it so you don't need to install any other software to extract, only to CREATE a zip file or any similar compressed file. And when you're doing that, don't use WinRAR or WinZip, use 7-Zip which is completely free and does not replace the icon for every zip file with their own logo like WinZip does...

Ok, I'll do that- one question though, how much space does it take up One of my computers has very limited data space left, so I'd like to know if I could afford to install it on both my computers.

It's super-small. 92kb zipped, IDK how much unzipped, but still.
For comparison, Neopets' cavemaker is 299kb zipped and 708kb extracted...

Hey so I basically have an HATIC version working, it didn't take too long but I didn't test it hardly at all lol. Anyway I need to experiment with some HATIC stuff just to see if it works how I thought I read it did... But anyway I still need an image for the terrain type that's missing from Jell's image (I think it's terrain 2, but no promises), I need images for all 3 platforms that have the background properly removed... and Paint is like, the worst ever at scaling images, so if somebody would like to scale some images (but with the background removed) for the enemies and Hannah, that would be nice. Teo's either had the background in it or a black background (same colour as outlines).

Aside from that, if I combine them into one Cavemaker, how should it work? I was originally thinking, back when I would have different "Themes" it would just be something in the options menu. It could still work like that but I'm not sure it makes sense anymore now that it's not just a L&F thing. The other way would be to basically have a submenu for all the loading cave options and you pick new pirate cave or new ice cave... The cavecodes don't differentiate between the two, so it can't be done automatically. Now I could have an option to convert a cave from one to the other but some data might be lost in the transition. Like, if you change an ice cave to a pirate cave, the snow all becomes fake crates, and then when you change it back, now it's still fake crates, you see? It should be possible to avoid that but is it worth it? The last thing is when you switch from editing a pirate cave to an ice cave, the tile select menu has to change. Keeping your scrollbar at the right place is a huge pain, I'm sure I've mentioned that before. I wish I knew how to work that better but for now you can probably expect your scrollbar in that pane to drift around a bit when you switch from one cave to another. So any suggestions about how it should work?

There are already some test levels around in the level database, and some are pretty interesting.

Terrain 1 is the bright one with some kind of "bubbles", the second one has a strange structure with even some dark lines or something, and the third one is a bit darker, but has a smooth structure and reminds of HATPC terrain 4.

That's right.

Yeah, I didn't see the outlines in the same colour... Oh well, maybe someone more experienced can do this. :p

Hehe, the themes would be even a bit of a fancy thing, but it's a nice idea. Add somewhere something like "Pirate Theme" and "Ice Theme", and when you click one or another, currently opened cave/all opened caves turn into the theme you chose. If it's too many work, I see, but it can be just "new ice cave" and "new pirate cave", it doesn't make any bigger difference. If someone wants to make a pirate one, clicks that option, and vice-versa. The themes aren't that needed, but it would be nice to convert the caves.

If it works like that, then don't torture yourself and just ""new ice cave" and "new pirate cave", it doesn't make any bigger difference".

The scrollbar in wrong place isn't that huge pain I guess... :p But you know, you can first just release some kind of beta version, and then see what is right for people and what's wrong. I hope I helped.

I verified that Enemy 4 is still limited to 1 per level. There's a 6 enemy limit -- the first 6 encountered in the code appear. If you have any enemy 4's, they will use up the last slot and only the last one in the code appears. I'm not sure if this is 100% consistent with HATPC but it probably is? Why always enemy 4, lol. That's one less thing I have to change to make HATIC work.

Teo all you really need to do is resize Jell's images for me for the enemies at least. Nobody's provided usable images for the platforms or terrain 2 though.

You have a couple days before I just put up an HATIC cavemaker with crappy images. I wonder if I turn the background off if that would be useable or if it would have that same colour as the outlines problem...

Here's a platform with properly removed background.

http://www.jellyneo.net/images/guides/game_haticgame_platform.png

EDIT: I've also (I hope properly, because the proportions are I hope properly saved :p) resized jell's enemies with my Screenshot Captor program (by the way, a great program, I recommend it).

> LINK <

EDIT #2: I also found a properly taken terrain 2 (not somewhere from the middle of walls, it was calculated from where to take it) I hope it's enough. :p But yeah, platform left and right... (shut up Teo... :p)

So I didn't see Teo's edit. I did what I could with the tiles I didn't have and the enemies all look like crap. Eventually I will be attempting to make the cavemaker capable of both types of caves, but this was a lot easier to do. I'll be sure to use those better enemy tiles in the next update.

www.freewebs.com/cavehelp/IceCavemaker.zip

Ugh, sorry Teo but these still won't work. You need to be using a transparent background when you scale these down or else the colour that you used as your background won't be filtered out completely in the cavemaker...

Woah, almost 00:00 at me and I was going to sleep but something told me to look here and voila! :p I see it's not bad but I'm always having problems with transparent BGs and this is why I just provided these images with a filled BG, I thought you could turn it into a transparent BG yourself. :p Should be free at home after 16-20 hours from now so going to try it out then.... Good work!

Cavemaker saves some setting there, like, what caves you had open and what options you had set for them.
