That's why I say go Ubuntu.
The computer I'm looking at for me is around $1000-$1300. I am going to buy the parts over time, though, to get the best deals I can. I signed up for NewEgg's deals, and they have some pretty good ones. Now I just need the right parts to show up..

@shos
I don't have a good work computer yet. My boss is trying to get the university to let me use one, but that'll probably get done sometime after our deadline is over, plus a year. I need all that power to run 3D models and build environments in the Unreal Engine. My poor laptop runs out of juice.

Woohoo! After 3.5 years of semi-casual on-and-off-and-on playing, I've achieved 100% completion in Burnout Paradise! Actually I wasn't doing this for fulfillment, but more to pass the time in which I can't afford to buy another game/no good ones are coming out. Oh woe is me (I guess I could try and beat Super Monkey Ball Deluxe, but I'd need to start taking Vitamin D supplements.

Hey, Portal players. For someone who has never played Portal before, should I buy 1 or 2? And do you think the console or PC version is better? I'm not interested in modding it or anything, if that makes a difference.

Never played 2, but 1 is awesome.
Nothing wrong with the PC version, cannot speak for the console one. | | Isa |

If you decide to get Portal 2, then I highly recommend you get the PS3 version, as that version comes with both the PS3 and the PC editions.
As for which game to get, I recommend that you at least start with Portal 1. And if you're going to get Portal 1, then you should get the Orange Box. I know you asked which Portal game you should get, but the Orange Box is 5 games in one, and about the same price, depending on which version you get. The Orange Box, for the PS3, is much harder to find, and closer to $30, the price of the 2nd, while the PC version is only $20. And, naturally, if you want Portal 1 for the console, you'll have to buy it in the Orange Box.
Portal 2 can be easily played without ever touching the first game, though playing the first game and levels, and then playing the 2nd game and seeing what has happened to the area you are in, and how it's changed since the first one is cool, and to me, adds to the game. Something else is that simply playing the first one, and then wanting more depth and story line and simply more portals, and then playing the 2nd game and getting all that was very satisfying to me.
As for PC vs. Console, I prefer PC, though with the limited access to decent game-playing computers that I have, I find the console versions much more enjoyable. Naturally, aiming on the console, with the engine they have, is far from Call of Duty on a 10 sensitivity, though it isn't that hard to master. A bonus about the PC version is console commands. I doubled my time in Portal 1 on the PC just by looking up console commands, and playing around with HL2 weapons against GLADoS and the turrets. On the PS3, the Orange Box has pretty slow loading times. Portal 2, however, is very nice in loading times on the PS3, as it was made specifically made by Valve, not ported by a 3rd party, and Valve said that the PS3 version of Portal would be the best.
I assume that you've probably done research, and know about the Orange Box, though I thought I should remind you about how awesome it is.

Definitely go for Portal 1. Portal 2 is a good game, but I think Portal 1 was better. It's kinda short, but still amazingly fun. I played it through probably 40-50 times, and I did all the extra levels, speed runs, challenges, etc. Plus, playing Portal just makes you feel smart.

What sniper said.
Also, have you guys heard about a game made by neopets called Hannah and the pirate caves? It has its own level creator and everything!

sounds kind of like Neopets doesn't care about it anymore, has a stupid level upload-related glitch that they wont fix. stupid stuff really... but besides that it sounds like an amazing game. | | Jorster |

It is a FPS (or at least has the engine of one), so you should definitely get Portal for the PC.
Either way, start with Portal 1. If you like it, get Portal 2.

It's not a joke if it isn't funny. There is no context to what you said, and on it's own it isn't funny. | | Jorster |

The context was we were talking about portal. Therefore it was relevant

I didn't think it was funny either, for the reason outlined by Flash; you just said something portal-related during a portal discussion - that's not really a joke. But I don't understand why flash is getting so upset over someone trying to be funny, not being funny. Generally when I see that happen, I just ignore it as opposed to getting in their face about it. Maybe it's because I'm nice, and I suppose that Flash's approach might actually be better for jorster in the long run, because it lets him know which jokes perhaps aren't that funny, but I still think that flash came out sounding a little bit too mean.
Anyways, back on topic, I think I'd probably get Portal 1 first if I had to choose, because you can always get portal 2 later, and if you get portal 2 first, it would be kind of weird getting portal 1.

. I agree.
anyway this talk about portal - I only ever played Portal: the flash version on Kongregate, never played really the game. once my ubercomputer(not as uber as yours sniper ) comes, should I add it to the list?

I agree with what you guys are saying, again, it wasn't meant to be funny, it was just me being stupid.
