So recently I got the opportunity to go in to a drug treatment center/rehab and be a part of a Narcotics Anonymous panel and talk to about 50 young people about addiction and how to recover and the gifts it's given me. It was a really cool chance and I just wanted to share it with somebody

That's great, Jorster! Career in drug counselling perhaps? So how have you recovered, and what gifts has that given you? | | soccerboy13542 |

RE: mafia
I've had a terribly busy week apparantly, since my birthday happened on Monday, so I really could not get this done. I have the setup ready, tomorrow or Saturday, it'll happen

well I haven't recovered per se, as no one ever really "recovers". Recovery is a process, a long one, that requires a lot of care and effort. But today I no longer have the desire to use, nor do I need to act out on defects of character, because I have other options and tools to handle stress and such. Gifts of recovery are all of the above plus an awesome girlfriend, a fantastic circle of friends that are also addicts and have my back, as well as a relationship with my family and the trust of others again. As for the career I think that'd be awesome! I have a couple of friends that work in treatment centers and love it.

Edit: That means I've been here since I was 11
Edit 2: How did any of you stand me

at times we didn't!
But we were all really stupid long ago.
I remember when the "14-15" category was the mods (more or less) with the exception of Dando(who we all thought was a 22 yo girl) and csd (who was...18?). I know that some of the really young ones were sooooo difficult

I distinctly remember Jory being on the old interguild as well and having his age set to "23" and me believing him, which made me wonder why Soccer, a young boy, was friends with an adult man. So it's been more than 9 years...
Re: Shos, I know everyone used to make fun of you for posting your muscles on the internet, but, honestly, if I found a 15 year old boy posting pictures like that today, my first reaction would be "wtf, where are your parents and why do they let you do this"

It's okay, Jorster - I don't know many young people who were always well-behaved, polite and reasonable when operating behind an anonymous mask on the Internet.
I was incredibly obnoxious on the Internet, including on the Interguild, for a very long time. I think when you're that age, it's hard to understand how the words you type on your computer can make other people feel. When you can spend as much time as you like coming up with some snarky comeback, you usually end up convincing yourself that it's okay to make a real nasty comment, one that you would never have dared make if confronted with the other person face-to-face.
As I get older, the more I realise that the Internet, while being an incredible life-changing tool, is also one that brings out the worst of us. It changes us physically too, at least at a neuronal level, whittling away our attention spans and getting us hooked on the notification-dopamine cycle. If I have children, I'll think twice before giving them unlimited access to the Internet, or whatever incarnation of it exists then. | | Jorster |
