Hi Silver. I know a few years ago I was drunk and came across an old post where you mentioned feeling depressed, and I gave it a really crappy response, so drunk me sent you an apology PM. Glad to hear you're working to better yourself, mental health problems always suck

Thanks! Yes, I saw that PM (a few years late...sorry about that). Did you get my reply?

Strange. Guess it got eaten by the system, because I know I sent one.

I'll just reiterate what I said here: it's fine; I wasn't long-term affected by what you said or anything. I know I've been cruel to people who didn't deserve it either, so I understand the feeling, and I appreciate the apology.

That link might've expired if it was an instant invite. Does this work?

Does CSD have a decent computer by now? I mean it has been like a zillion years

I just finished reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. The main character, Marie-Laure, is a blind girl from Paris in WWII who lives with her father. I really enjoyed the chapters from her perspective. She likes Jules Verne, snails, and is pretty bright—she certainly makes the most of her situation. It's nice to read a work from the point of view of someone with a disability; it reminds me what I take for granted, like being able to read books normally, or not having to count my paces to know when I'm at the bakery, or even being able to see what I look like.

Equally interlaced with Marie-Laure's chapters are others detailing the life of a poor German orphan, Werner, who has a knack for tinkering with radios. His struggle is primarily a moral one; growing up during the years preceding the war, he has to balance the harsh nationalism by which he is surrounded with the sentimentality of his upbringing, and the way that this internal conflict manifests by the end of the novel is pretty touching.

I thought it had a compelling story and was very sweet throughout. It's an easier read than many books simply because of the format; each perspective lasts at most a few pages before switching. It doesn't feel rushed or artificially segmented, though; I think that being broken up into smaller chunks makes it more digestible, and prevents you from forgetting too much about the other parts of the plot, which can be a problem with more long-form structures. Solid recommendation!

So, anyone has read and is now seeing HIS DARK MATERIALS by Phillip Pullman?
That is one of the best book series I've ever read (I've also just bought the Book of Dust I&II[haven't read yet]) and I was really excited to hear a series is coming out, especially after the superbad box office bomb which was the first movie they tried to make about it

I didn't know they were making a TV series of it! Will have to give the books a re-read too.

So how are the ppl of the Interguild handling COVID-19? I'm in between jobs right now, so things are pretty boring on my end. Both my sisters in college have online-only classes for the time being though. My band has 2 local shows in the back half of the month, and hopefully those still happen

Online classes on my end too. I'm heading home tomorrow! This is all very irritating. My favorite activity right now is social dancing (Scottish, English, contra, etc.) and I can't do it at all with the outbreak. Even had to cancel a dance that I was organizing! I'm also questioning whether it's smart to go to the gym, although not getting any exercise would also make me pretty unhappy. I expect that I'm going to be extremely bored for the next three weeks (at least). I think I will just cook a whole lot of food.

I'm not particularly worried about feeling the effects of the disease; I'm a lot more sanitary than the average person, and if I do catch it, my immune system is pretty great. I'm personally more concerned with being a carrier for someone else.

Now all of Ohio's bars, dine-in restaurants, libraries, and schools are closed. My band's one show is definitely off since that was gonna be at a bar. The other is in someone's basement, not sure about that one. I've still been going out to the gas station once a day cuz I have a mtn dew addiction, and just taking a drive is nice, but I think tomorrow I might just buy a ton of bottles and prepare to stay in until further notice

I guess I'm in the same situation as Yimmy— online classes each day, and then I just play video games. I didn't tend to go out very often before COVID anyway, so I'm not being prevented from doing my favorite things to the extent that atvelonis is. The biggest change for me is that I no longer have to get up before sunrise to get ready for school, so I've been in a much more pleasant state of mind lately. I do hope that things return to normal soon, though.

My town now has a curfew being enforced by the police. This is dystopian and insane for a virus whose death rate is not actually that significant. If people were going to go out anyway, why force more of them to go out during the day?

I think most officials acting in good faith are just trying to avoid the US during into another Italy-- hospitals overwhelmed, entire country on lockdown, ppl dying en masse. And given the horror stories I've seen of people trying to get tested in this country, it's better to minimize the chances of someone getting it rather than just banking on a low mortality
