You better fix it, then. And how do the power boxes look 'cartoony'?

There won't be any wood in the objects. Remember that this is an abandoned, war-devastated planet, where the previous society was more advanced than our society. Not only does wood rot, making it disappear over the ages, but an advanced society will use more metal. Especially with the post-apocalypse theme, metal fits far better than wood.
And I could easily make those needles wider, but I choose to do them like this first because that is how big they are in the Aeon demo. And I don't want anything like HatPC spikes, where you can stand halfway into them without dying.

I have redone the normal crate a bit to make it look less bland and I've made an reinforced version of the crate:

I'd say the normal metal crate would be our equivalent of the wooden crate and the reinforced crate would be our equivalent of the steel crate. We could also have the reinforced crate be the indestructible crate.

I like the crates a lot better, although I think that the reinforced onces should be the indestructible crates, and that you're new design for the breakable crates should be used for the fragile + unbreakable crates.

My only criticism is that I believe that the inner area of the reinforced crate should be a little bit darker. Other than that, great job.

Those indestructible (because that's what they look like to me) crates are very much awesome. I still fail to see how those breakable crates are supposed to be broken.

Remember that we don't have to be perfectly realistic. I can't speak for anyone else, but I've never questioned that in a cave, filled with water, there exists steel crates perfectly shaped without any rust. Neither have I questioned that by hitting a wooden crate, I fire an arrow that travels at a constant speed unaffected by gravity. The players would probably not mind if a wooden crate was included in Aeon.

I forgot to add criticism to the Power Box.

First of all, the stripes should be removed, I don't think that they look good. You should probably go with the lighter of the two greys, and then do some subtle shading that most people won't really notice, but will make it more natural looking.

The Lightning bolt should be lighter, it appears to be way too dark right now.

The box should extend upwards between the two little lightbulbs. The lightbulbs should be made thinner and taller(and the base of the powerbox should be made shorter), and be pushed to the more to the edge. This will make it looks reasonably stackable.

Also, to put make the bulbs stand out more, they should be lighter.

Whoa those are great spikes.

I suggest shifting the image over a bit so that the repeating pattern can look better when it's by itself.

Well, we have yet to make a fully successful powerbox.

You can start a new one, which might actually end up looking cooler, or you could just try to change jell's with my suggestions a few posts above.

The basic description for the powerbox, by me:

The powerbox should be grey, with a yellow lightning bolt in the center of it, which distinguishes it as a power-box. The bolt would be preferably diagonal, or otherwise vertical, like jell's. There should be two light bulbs on the top corners of the box, one red, one blue, and both colors should be bright and big enough to make them more noticeable than in jells. They should also be made thinner and taller than in jell's, because the box should still continue upwards between the bulbs, so that they appear stackable.

Maybe there could be some kind of yellow glow coming from the power boxes, so that they appear significant and people know that they should grab them.

yeah I can, but it should be taken into account when designing the tile so that we make sure it looks good with the glow.

I disagree with it glowing; they might not look good stacked together. But, honestly, we'll have to see what it looks like once we finish, and then decide whether or not it looks good glowing when stacked together or at all.

I continue to be baffled by your amazing artwork. Keep in mind that we need quite a lot of sprites for the characters though, because of their animations.

actually, they would all have to be wearing some kind of clothing that they would probably be wearing on a ship, right? But then again, what kind of clothing would that be?

Also we need to think about the proportions of the characters. Both in Aeon and HATPC, the character hit regions are kinda wide, so that could mean that we have to adjust the way they look to fit those proportions? Don't try to change everything so that it fits that arrow-box in the demo, but just try to make them wider somehow, which would result in a different art style.

These are all really good.

However, I have a complaint... and this should apply to music as well. I recommend, for the sake of consistency, that as we don't have a professional team working on the project, different aspects of the game should be left to individuals. ONE artist. ONE composer. ONE official artwork peep. ONE sound effect creator. Constructive criticism on these can always be useful, but I think we should try to keep things consistent. That way, one box won't look cheesier than the next, and one character won't seem much taller than the next. Et cetera.

Ideas are still welcome though, of course. That's just my take on things.

No offence, but you really sound as if you want to snag the music composer.

Ha, no no no, and if someone good comes along, I'm fine with them taking over. I'm just saying that, for the sake of consistency, it would be best to only have one. If not that, one person who does all the mixing, to keep stuff together. I'm not trying to control it all, I'm just saying SOMEONE should.

I get what you're saying, and it probably is the best thing to do. And it might even lead to more progress if we had official people working on certain parts of the game. Like if we had an official artist, s/he might feel more responsibility and make more artwork. Unless you're jell...

I will work more on the graphics this summer.
And it's not like you've done so much work the past few weeks.
