I'm not all that caught up with current movies, but the last movie that I saw in a theater was Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier. I have to say, that was probably one of my favorite movies of recent years. It was just so awesome. It was well-written, well-paced, it fleshed out the characters a lot more, and there were a bunch of great surprises in it. I even bought the soundtrack. | | krotomo |

I saw a documentary called Jodorowsky's Dune which was interesting. It's about a film adaptation of the novel Dune that was almost made in the '70s, which might have been pretty awesome but couldn't get funding. The documentary's about how the director, Jodorowsky, wrote the script, storyboarded it, and went out assembling the team he wanted. It would have had music by Pink Floyd and characters played by Mick Jagger, Salvador Dali, and Orson Welles, among some other talented folks. In the end, even with all the people who had signed on and all the work that had been completed, none of the studios would touch it because they thought Jodorowsky was a nutjob. And he sort of was, but... the good kind. | | jebby |

Wow, what a waste of time and effort... Wasn't the adaptation that finally got made kind of obscene/homophobic in the end? People keep telling me to watch it, but I'm not convinced it's worth the time. I personally didn't enjoy the book - the setting wasn't that interesting to me and messiah characters like Paul irritate the hell out of me. | | jellsprout |

There is something about Dune that makes all adaptation completely insane. No idea what, though, I read all the books and it all seemed pretty straightforward to me. Perhaps people thought spice was some drugs metaphor and therefor the adaptation should be as drug fuelled as possible. Dunno.

I haven't seen it either, but yeah, apparently it's pretty awful. I also haven't read the book, but I've been meaning to. Heard mixed things about it, but the Wikipedia summary makes it sound pretty cool at least. | | jellsprout |

Dune is an odd exception to Science Fiction stories in that it actually gets less storydriven and more philosophical. Most great sci-fi starts with the exploration of an interesting and in the sequels, once the concept has been explored enough it becomes more focused on story instead. Dune inverts this, being almost Fantasy in the first book and growing increasingly philosophical in the sequels.

I saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier the other day, which was pretty good. I was surprised by how political the plot was. It was basically a takedown of the NSA's attitude towards security ('know everything about everyone all the time' . The Winter Soldier himself was the least interesting part of it for me but he seemed like more of a subplot than anything. | | Yaya |

Saw Guardians Of The Galaxy tonight. It's the first Marvel movie I had seen since Iron Man 3 because super hero films are oversaturated and have pretty much stopped interesting me. I gave GotG a shot cuz it looked different than everything else Marvel had done and I have a soft spot for wacky ensemble crew space adventures. It was decent. I liked the main characters, the art, and the fight scenes. But it was a pretty cut and dry wacky ensemble crew space adventure film and basically went down the plot point checklist such as space prisons, space artifacts, space frontier colonies, all of which I've seen done better elsewhere. I lost interest about halfway through the film, said uninterest culminating in another climax that involves a giant spaceship crashing into a planet. And the villains sucked. It had its charm, but not enough.
COMING SOON: A giant meteor. Please.

@Sefro: That was probably done to surprise the viewers. Hype up the Winter Soldier as the main conflict in the movie during promotion and surprise people with the actual plot. They did the same thing with Iron Man 3.
And I don't suppose you watch Agents of SHIELD. It has a great multipart tie-in with Captain America 2.
And tomorrow, finally GotG will premiere in the Netherlands. I've had to avoid spoilers like crazy for the past month.

Is Agents of SHIELD worth watching? I heard somewhere that it wasn't great, but that might have just been the first few episodes or so. | | jellsprout |

The first half of the season is pretty meh, but starting from the half-season finale it becomes pretty good and the Captain America 2 tie-in episodes are great.

I saw that the other day. It was pretty dumb, but the fight scenes were cool and that was the point I guess. | | Sefro |

I just saw a film called Frank and it was fantastic, probably the best movie I've seen this year. It's about a bunch of eccentric musicians led by a guy who wears a giant head which he refuses to take off. It's hard to describe. It's mostly a comedy but it's also a really sincere and sort of melancholy look at mental illness. The last scene is one of my favourite scenes in any movie. | | shos |

I am. The trailers for it are good, and if there's going to be a battle with five armies, I don't want to miss it.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS
I'm seeing it on Wednesday next week with my friends. I didn't really like the second one; they kept adding useless scenes (e.g. the one with Radagast and that whole Kili-elf subplot, that was stupid), plus they made Smaug a wyvern when he is in reality a dragon. And seriously, they blazed right through Mirkwood in it. It took them way longer to get through it in the book and I would've liked to see some more stuff in there. So, compared to the book, it was pretty bad IMO.
I'm really hoping this one will be better than the last. Trailer looks pretty good, and I'm thinking that there won't be a bunch of stupid useless scenes like there were in the second one because this one is shorter than the previous two.

I watched it today and maratoned the first two movies before. It is good, but still nowhere close to LotR.

Thought Hobbit 3 was coming out of Wednesday but turns out it was today so I went and saw it. It was okay, but there was waaaaaaay too much completely unnecessary CGI. Probably would've been a lot better if they had used more practical effects IMO (e.g. for the Orcs).
Also I could not stop laughing when what's-his-name who shot the black arrow said "Winter is upon us".
