This was a difficult competition to judge, and at first we couldn't agree. The entries were just too close. If we could, we would give first place to every entrant. And CSD, because he's cool like that.

After many hours of vivid discussion which was almost happening at real time, we finally agreed.

Congratulations to the winners!

It's good to see such effort being put into the competitions again after the previous failures. I really enjoyed judging this.

Why did we start this comp in the first place, anyways? The other one had 2 entries and was being extended, after another comp which experienced 3 entries even after a week of extension.

I suggest that maybe we should go back to 3 week comps. I also suggest that in the future, if the previous comp has 2 entries, and being extended to a second week, that it is not a good idea to start a new comp, especially before the other one has ended!

With that said, DDA = not something I would want to make a level based around. Maybe other people would find it more fun, but IMO it's only really fun to play.

And also, news posts should be karma-rateable, so that I could give Jell +karma for this.

yeah I wanted karma-rated news posts too, but it was decided that it would give the staff an unfair advantage in gaining karma.

Comps are a complicated issue. If we don't have them, then it leads to less user activity. If we have them too often, then it's likely that they will end too fast for people to join. But if they last too long, it's also likely that people will forget about them and not even join, resulting in nearly the same effect as if we just stopped holding comps in the first place.

So I guess we need to be somewhere in the middle, like 2-week comps. But that's not enough. We need to hold popular themes. The reason some of our themes stink lately is that we're trying to come up with ones we haven't had yet and it's resulting in uninteresting ones. Also, if it's a theme that we already had, people won't feel very inspired to join.

The kind of themes that we need should be very broad, and maybe have very little to do with the actual design of a level. For example, the Parody comp was successful because most people were interested in making a joke than in designing a level. We need more stuff like that. Our past themes have been pretty unimaginative.

I know it's mostly because it's because people have been busy with school, but what I'm saying is that we need to make comps that people will feel like they just can't miss because it's a great idea.

Actually, I believe that the main contribution to the lack of entries is the lack of spare time; regardless of what the theme is, people are short on time during the school year, and therefore, more likely to not make caves.

That said, make this a summer comp, and I could maybe see 2-3 entries. Maybe 4? I'm not too much into making DDA's, so maybe my opinion is a little biased.

But, yeah, broad themes + longer time = more than zero entries

And, Bm, my karma is higher than yours anyways.  'Nuff said.

Okay, that comment may have been unnecessary, but so is the "More Topics >>" button, but that doesn't stop that from being there...

I would just like to point out that this is a true DDA comp, because nobody did anything.
