IO 2010 Pentathlon Round 3 - Three Arrows

Author: Yaya

Description:
This is what happens when I make Hatpc levels in short succession, lol. This is merely an ok level with 3 arrows. Yes, the title is awesome. Originally I thought of an infinitly worse title, but I was almost positive it'd fail the profanity check, lol. Anyways it's a smaller and easier then usual cave with some backtracking and some water torwards the end. Everybody play this level and tell me if it has enough water for the IO swimming category.

LEVEL IS NOW OFFICIALLY POSSIBLE.

Retrospective edit March 2014: This is definitely one of the weirdest levels that I've made in my era of experience cavemaking. It just goes against my typical conventions and instincts for making levels on multiple levels, and clearly the results were mixed. I don't even know why/how I got the idea to design a cave like this, because I could never see myself naturally doing so again. I guess I have to blame the arrows.

You know what guys, I'm actually quite disappointed that this cave won first place in the three arrows category. firstly, the arrow near the pawkeet really isn't *so* important. it should be used in a much more special way; here it can easily be replaced by a wooden dynamite without anyone noticing. secondly, the cave is simply impossible. in case you didn't notice, the arrow near the skull can be replaced by a box at the moment, since there's a SECRET AREA and a platform IN ITS WAY??

if nobody noticed that, it means nobody got there. so, this cave won first place in our three arrows comp, while being impossible, and while nobody even saw the WHOLE buttom part of it?

No wonder I got stuck...

Oh that reminds me of how Sweating bullets is impossible and I forgot to tell you Yaya, there is a platform in the way of some falling crates in the first room the second time through, sorry about that...

Great
Cool. I managed to die very quickly, and I didn't get too far. But judging from what I saw, it was amazing.

Ok, I know this cave made Shos very angry because it won 1st even though it was impossible and all. Sorry Shos. The impossibility was caused by one of those situations where I kept updating the code manually after I posted it incase I saw anything that troubled me, but for some reason I used the unupdated cavemaker version when changing an unnessecary crawlspace, thus slightly degressing from the original cave code. It's just I wasn't here for 2 weeks to notice I messed up a last minute edit.

Anyways, many apologies to Shos, I'll either edit levels one way or the other from now on. But I'll still humbly accept my trophy. (consider the cave fixed tomorrow, when I'm more awake)

you don't have to apoligize; this kind of mistakes appears to be quite common for some reason. as long as you fix this, it should be okay. what made me angry was not the fact that it was impossible - but the fact that DESPITE its impossibility it won - cuz it means people didn't play the cave through, or even go over the code. that's why I opened the rejudge topic.

so uh, [offtopic: oh my god i think someone near me jsut farted, it smells so awful here] firstly, you should treat this rate as a 7, but i wanted to ease on the rates of 9.5 and 9.6 from people who didn't even see the cave and/or comment about it.

now about the cave, why i rated it 7 'only'. this is a good cave; well thought out. however, it is quiet small despite its large size. what I mean is, unless you're going to consider this a puzzle cave, this cave does not satisfy my needs. it has few speed traps which are short and easy; it has lots and lots of water adventuring which is boring; it has some retreating and good use of space - but mostly, it's a very bad use of space.
you get the idea - your cave has both good and bad things in it. nothing original, nothing new or interesting, nothing special. just random goodness, so i'm rating the cave good, and no more.

Sup_mus could you please stop giving out rates of 10/10, not every level deserves it (not that this is a bad cave). Give your 2 favourite caves 10 by all means, but not 10 or 20 otherwise there's no point in the rating system.

Yaya, this cave wasn't as great as I thought. Pretty much what shos brought up, there was too much backtracking further on and not enough traps or puzzles to make it interesting. Unusually I feel here that there is nothing to be gained in enjoyment for me from playing the second half of the level judging by the walkthrough. It lacks that fun factor that your caves usually have. The first half of the level was good though.

Yes, even though I think my water actually worked in this cave. It was thrown in there just to make the level longer, because originally the level was uber-short. As the description says, his is what happens when I make Hatpc levels in short succession, lol. I didn't expect much from this level, let allowing winning 1st while it was impossible.

Shos there is a reason for the phrase "The judges decision is final". Stop bringing this up, just because you or anyone else doesn't agree with the rankings there is no reason to take this out on the judges and make them judge again. If you have different views to the judges you're just going to have to live with it.

If you read what I wrote in that topic you'd see that i don't want to replace the judging with new ones. I want to ADD new ones, you understand? this is not quite about the competitions; but more about the interguild itself as a user made levels community. we have no point in making amazingly large and neat levels just to get a 'great cave, 10/10'. it's no use, it's not fun, to get ratings like that. what i wanted to have is that every time someone rates another person's cave, then don't do it just to say that you rated it. make a full rating, explaining what you liked and what you didn't in the cave; what was annoying, what was awsome, where you're not sure, if it's cheatable, etc. ELABORATE. that's the word.

forbid? i didn't say anything about that. but seriously, suppose you worked hours on making a wonderful cave featuring a very awsome new concept with ideas that facilitize glitches in a way nobody ever thought about, and kk would come give youa 10/10 with the comment of 'great cave!', are you telling me that you would be satisfied?

I'd at least be more satisfied than if I didn't get any rate at all. It has happened multiple times.

well since we have the 'read later' thing, whenever a new level comes out, if i don't have time to thoroughly play and rate it i mark it as 'read later' and so, I will eventually rate everything.

will you feel the same if that was a 0/10 with the comment of 'this is crap'? you should, you know.

Hmm, after studying these posts, I've actually came to the conclusion that Shos is sorta right suprisingly. How come it seems like the only indepth reviews I got were the ones that gave me low rates? I appreciate GuyGuy/Jazz/Sup_Mus's rates and all, but it'd be nice to know WHY they liked the level. WHY did Jazz say it was amazing? WHY did GuyGuy think it was cool? WHY the **** did Sup_Mus give my level a 10? It's called constructive critiscism, and too many levels on this site are lacking it. Some members practice it, but others, I'm not sure if they've even heard of the concept. And after looking at this level, I might go to say that the people who did rate this amazingly didn't have any sort of reasoning behind it. Which in return goes all the way back to a post on another thread which ended up changing the difficulty rating.

Once again, everybody likes their caves to be rated high, but I might start pulling a Jell and -karma pointless reviews (for my levels only mostly) high score, or low score. Even commenting on how cool one ******* trap in the cave was would be good enough for me. I'm not immediately supporting Shos. I don't want to dominate peoples levels, once again it all goes down to the problem that some Interguildians need cave-rating lessons. So I"ll say, Shos is 75% percent right, and gets 1 karma for motivating me to write this post.  Apologies to GuyGuy, Jazz, Sup_mus and anyone else I may have offended by this post.

*Gets off soapbox*

It is important to remember who made the rating though, Sup_mus (like kk) gives out 10's to lots of caves, hence my comment. Guyguy in my opinion gives ratings that are generally too high or too low (lets say he extremises) and Rosabellis didn't get very far in the level so his rating was probably unjustified as well. Just as Silver has given a couple of my levels 5/10 without beating any of them, your cave this time was overrated.

If there are things in the level that are particularly annoying I would inform the level maker, but often I give a good rating without much explanation because most of it was just good and fun, in this case I told you what to improve and what I didn't like. We mainly need to encourage more thought towards ratings and if they are below say 8 then what would make them better.

I don't have time to look now, but maybe I'm wrong in which case I appologise. I probably just notice you rating things high and not your other ratings.
