Description:
My first cave in over a year!

Started working on it in maybe September-October '10, when I completely forgot about it maybe two weeks later. A year and a bit later (today), I got bored, thought I might start cavemaking again and found this cave in the archives.

Up on Housefly_I.
Enjoy!

Don't you mean 2010, not 2011?

This cave is ok so far (from what I've seen). I like it's simplicity and linearity (two things I'm not good at), but there's a few things holding this back (some are fixable some aren't. some are opinions.)

- The whole "grab the only treasure, but the door dastardly becomes out of reach!" thing has gotten kinda old in my eyes. Harumbai and Dando have pimped this concept a lot, and pretty much every active cavemaker has made a cave in this format. I'm not saying you did it wrong, I'm just tired of it. There's only so many ways you can make it look interesting.

- The traps are kinda generic. You can't have an original trap in HATPC anymore, but some just seem to be taken straight out of the textbooks (we all have our HATPC 101, Advanced HATPC, and Applied HATPC Theory books, of course).

- The timing is all over the place. Like Quirvy said, some traps are so harshly timed, that you have absolutely no idea what you're supposed to be doing the 1st time you go thru it (even with tutorial arrows), and will most likely die. Other traps have really off-par timing. Like the 1st trap involving the falling boulder, the trap with the mass of arrows a ways above the D in "Ced" (not sure if intentional, but the timing is so off on this one, that you have to wait for the arrow chain to finish before moving), and the cookie-cutter trailblazer thing on the left.

- On the topic of the 1st trap involving the boulder, there's nothing to stop you from doing the trailblazer after that trap instead of heading onward (that's how I know about it's issue despite not actually getting there). It's not really a problem if you have common sense, but I'm always paranoid when it comes to caves, and you obviously can't beat the level if you've already done the TB, but I don't think you can fix that.

- On the topic of the trailblazer, the top ladder tile prevents the arrow from blowing up the platform.

- The whole boulder pushing thing above the "ED" of Ced seems kinda unnecessary, it's kinda boring to just unlock two chambers, but that's more of an opinion. I probably would've added a speed trap in there, but that's my preference.

- The cave is kinda blocky (a nitpick), that spike floor above the trailblazer is kinda cringe worthy, and some areas where jumping is not used could use some ceiling texture.

I apologize for the incredibly random timed traps, I got so fed up with testing and editing the cave today that I decided to leave the cave as it is and upload it.

I took most of that boulder part from one of my old comp submissions called "Chain Reaction". I didn't know what to do to make the boulder fall in your path, so again I left that part as it is.

That 'grab-the-treasure-and-the-door-is-out-of-reach' concept is indeed overused, but a pretty cool concept nonetheless. There are several different ways to achieve this concept, but are still old and nothing new.

After finally beating this level, and usually dying due to lag instead of mistakes, my opinion of it slowly sank as I played it, decreasing from a nine to just below a seven and a half.

- For me, terrain four has gotten kind of boring, and huge useless empty spaces such as in the second last trap also are a deterring factor.
- The puzzles were extremely simple, and almost solved themselves. Very long corridors with nothing going on were also kind of a put-off.
- The extreme variance of the difficulty of each trap, and even within a trap, wasn't very deterring so much as separating.
- And just a personal nitpick, is that there's neither a gem or a heart, and room for one or both.

* There seemed to have been a half-finished gem.

+ The center region of the cave maintained a similar theme of masses of arrows and spikes.
+ Not very obvious things were included.
+ The door and start region have a similar more cramped and slightly harder theme.

2012 March Edit: I beat this in one try.

The reason why a lot of people use terrain 4 is because it's really easy to see secret areas with it, not that I really put that many secret areas.

I did not plan to put in a gem.

The lag is probably coming from your computer and not the level, because when I play it myself, there's no lag at all.

I am not the master of puzzles, meaning I'm also horrible at solving them.

I'm glad you rated it a 7 and not a 5 though. =)

I know, the lag IS my computer, so I didn't downrate it for that.

Oh okay, I thought you meant that as you played it the lag got worse resulting in you rating it two numbers below the number you would've rated it if there were no lag.
