Anyway, Romney's pretty much screwed because he lost too many of the swing states (Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, probably Ohio) and only really Florida is too close to call. | | Isa |

He hasn't lost them yet, but yeah, he's projected to lose them. | | atvelonis |

All the people in my school had to write a speech on who they think should be president, but not everyone finished saying their speech, so the unfinished people who were for Romney went today, and I bet they felt really awkward because Obama had already won the election.

So why did the Republican party lose? In my opinion, they needed to attract too wide of a range of voters (Religious guys, Corporations, Libertarians, Tea Party). The worst problem however was that Mitt Romney had a tough race for nominee and was forced to go far further to the right to win the nomination, erasing moderate Mitt Romney as Governor of Massachusetts. This meant that when he needed to attract independents he either seemed two-faced or to conservative. Obama was running a strong campaign which capitalised of Hingrich's opinion that taxes were going to be a problem, and labelled him as an asset-stripper who left his money in the Cayman Islands. The party also ignored minorities far too much - They need to realise that we aren't loving in the 1960s and that the minorities are slowly increasing their turnout and portion of the electorate. Finally, far too much focus on being the religious party - Catholics are traditionally Democrat as with more liberal Jews, and of course Atheists and other religions whilst te Republicans focus on Evangelical Christians, yet Evangelical Christians are beginning to stop looking at religion as much in elections.
For the party to live forwards, they need to separate from the Tea Party (who did abysmally this election) and label themselves as primarily Libertarians both socially and economically. They need to stop alienating minorities, and a Hispanic candidate would be very useful for them. Most importantly however, they need to keep ther hold on Texas which is slowly slipping away due to increased voting force of Hispanics. If they lose Texas, it's game over for Republicans. | | Isa |

I agree with you on minorities being a problem for the GOP, but not on religion. What's a problem for them is of course how far to the right they've stepped. They keep talking about how they won the independent vote - but they lost the moderate vote badly. | | Jorster |

Figure out if gay marriage affects you by taking this quick little survey:
Does gay marriage affect you?
Are you gay and want to get married?
If so, then yes it does!
Are you not the above?
If so, then no it doesn't!

Some people didn't want to vote for a mormon, and some didn't want to vote for someone they suspected was a Muslim? | | FlashMarsh |

Am I stupid or something? I can't figure out how to read this chart. I get that the top line is projected, the bottom line is actual, the areas in the middle....?
Also, I laughed at what projection the used. January 2001. Hmmm, what else happened later in 2001, I wonder...

The Republicans have shifted too far to the right. Thanks to the Two Party system all the Democrats have to do is portray themselves as a moderate or moderate-right party. Because there is no left wing party that people are willing to vote for, every left wing, moderate and moderate right voter is forced to vote Democrat. By forcing themselves into a corner like that, it was easy for the Democrats to claim everybody else.
Unless you life in one of the swing states, voting in the US is entirely useless anyway. It doesn't matter if you vote Democrat, Republican, Libertarian or Liam Neeson, if you life in New York your vote will go to the Democrats anyway. If the US wants to appear to be a legit democracy, they need to get rid of electoral votes and give the population a direct influence in the elections.

This goes for UK and other countries as well, though. Ask Jebby if he found his vote last election meaningful. | | atvelonis |

So Israel has only one big newspaper(one can argue that ther'es another one, but the first is overwhelmingly more used) and it has a section which has a daily poll. a question is presented, could be anything, and one person writes a few paragraphs on why A, and another writes about why B. So yesterday's question was, and I'm paraphrasing - "Is Israel's don't-do-anything policy about the Gaza strip correct?" and the answers were 95%(!!!) said no.
for the record - in the last few days, on average, a missile was shot at Israel roughly once every half an hour (twas around 120 rockets in two-three days)
So I opened our news site and found this:
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4304605,00.html
so question: what do you think we should do? :S interesting to hear some opinions from around the world.

I am mostly surprised, as Israel attacked the Gaza strip just this weekend.

the dda policy is that we don't attack, only respond. that is, if a rocket is shot at israel, we attack the shooting squad/location. it's a constant they-shoot-we-respond circle. this counts as doing nothing here since it doesn't prevent anything.

of course but this is how we call it, since it's practically the same since like 10 years ago. it's become so regular that, for example, my sister posted on facebook this one:
with the words 'made it all the way to Beer-Sheva and didn't hear an alarm!'. for reference, that's a drive of about 45-minutes.
so it's like doing nothing; since basically they don't aim, they just shoot, so occasionally people die, frequently people get trauma, many times daily property is damaged, etc. "suffer in silent".

The missile attacks of these past few days were done as retaliation of Israel's attack past weekend, not the other way around. Either Israel has excellent foresight or they don't take this "don't attack" policy very seriously.
