What would a page such as this look like?

Hmm, ok. I'm thinking 9 as well now, maybe with the border a tiny bit bigger. Idk, I just like the look of the content items popping out of the background.

With darker border (which is one way of making it seem thicker):

With actually thicker border:

I think 11 works the best.

Here's 11 with an even darker border.

I still think 11 looks best.

Actually the reason why I didn't like 13 much was because I felt like there was too much contrast between the background and the outlines, so I darkened up the background a bit:

I think we've finally perfected it.

where it says "The Great Level of Doom", because that's where the content begins.

I think we should also revamp thelogo. I don't really like our currentlogo because it looks too generic. But don't go overboard and make a huge fancy animated obnoxiouslogo.

Actually, I dunno. I was toggling through all of these, and I still like 11 better. I'm going to stick with that because we spent too much time on this little issue already.

I thought about that, and the biggest problem about our current logo is that it's so wide that it's had to make it fit in a small space, which is a huge fail for a logo. But having said that, changing the logo isn't that big of a priority right now, so maybe I'll do that some other time.

The next thing I need to work on is figuring out how to make the content and the sidebars look right. Then I'll probably start looking into how the mobile site might look. I imagine that the mobile site wouldn't have the chatbox on every page, but perhaps simply a link to it. Maybe that link can highlight whenever you have unread posts in the chatbox?

That would be cool.

I could try and create a new logo. Same color scheme?

Progress!

http://revamp.interguild.org/

In the old layout, the amount of HTML from the beginning of the page to the end of the navigation bar is: 27,671 characters
In the new layout, the amount of code is: 830 characters
To be fair, a lot of stuff is still missing, so that number will likely increase, but I doubt it'll be very drastic.

I don't think the new layout is going to have the drop-down navigation that the current layout has. Right now, those submenus are only really used for the Games and Forums tabs, and since we're removing the games tab, that leaves the Forum the only submenu that we might actually use, so I figured it'd be better just to just put links on the forum index or something so that you can get to those pages.

What do you think? Would you miss the submenus if they're gone? Would you miss being able to open HATPC from any page? Perhaps we could find another place for such shortcuts?

Also, here's some more info on some of the programming decisions I've made:

The site will be made using HTML5 and CSS3 features. I know that they're not supported in older browsers, but the target audience of this site does not include users of older browsers. I'm assuming most of you are visiting from home, rather than a public computer or from a workplace where the IT guys are too lazy to keep their software up to date. Plus, I'm not planning to re-code the site again anytime soon, so I might as well use the standards of the new era.

There is one feature that doesn't work in the latest version of IE and that's the placeholder text in the search box that says "Search", but no one in this community uses (or should be using) IE anyway. Also, the placeholder text is a little hard to read in Opera because they don't let you change the color of that text, but it's just legible enough that I'm fine leaving it there.

The new site will also try to be as accessible as possible. I can't imagine why a visually impaired user would be interested in a video game community, but who knows? And the main reason is simply that it helps with search engine optimization, anyway.

I may or may not start working on the mobile adaptation of this layout next.

Hey, I'm visually impaired and I love games and the community.
But I know you mean screen readers and completely blind people, not just mostly-blind people like me .
I APPROVE  of HTML5 and CSS3 and SEO and mobile layout and accessibility and sticking it to IE.

Take notes from the IC.  I think it works like Google; it uses a crawler.  Thomas posted about it on here.

Yeah, all of the search features I've coded for the Interguild in the past have been extremely lazy. This time around, I'm going to follow Thomas' advice and implement a database table of keywords so that you can actually find things based on relevancy.

Wouldn't relevancy make

apples oranges grapes x 500 have it so if you search "apples" that post would be 33.3% relevant, the same for oranges and grapes?

Two suggestions:

1. Rather than having a black mouseover background, just do a darker orange gradient. You could achieve this by having a semitransparent black PNG file for the background. It'd be a subtle different, but I think it would look a lot more modern.

2. Add "cursor:pointer;" to the :hover effect of the search button.

Thanks for those tips. I didn't notice how annoying the submit button was without the cursor.

I tried what you suggested with the rollover colors, but adding any significant amount of black to yellow really looks ugly. I tried using some kind of orange overlay, and I even tried inverting the gradient itself, but it just doesn't look very good. The ones that look best are when the color differences aren't all that significant, but I usually find those types of effects to be a little annoying because it just doesn't have as much feedback. One example of this is github's navigation bar. Whenever you roll over an element, the only feedback that you get is a very subtle blue tint and that kind of feedback just feels too soft and "blurry" for my taste.

What if you were do the semi-transparency (very slight, like 85% opaque) and then give the rollover a
1px solid #000
border? I think that'd be nicer. It'd still have the strong contrast, but look like glass.
