The judging for the parody comp still hasn't even started yet. 0_o But don't worry, we'll judge it soon... Right now Jell and I are signed up to judge it, and someone needs to come up to be the third judge.

HATPC Comp #26 - 16:9
This comp has already ended and has been judged.
Start Date: Saturday, Feb 14, 2009
End Date: Saturday, Feb 28, 2009
Game: Only HATPC content is allowed

Competition Rules:
Today may be Valentine's Day, but did you really expect a competition where all the levels would just have a bunch of hearts in it? No, instead this comp is dedicated to the United States' nationwide shift to digital TV on February 17th. Even though this date was postponed until June 12th or something, a lot of channels are still going ahead with the transition, thus terminating all of their analog broadcasts forever.

So the theme of this competition is the famous 16:9 ratio. All you have to do is make any cave with the dimensions proportionate to the 16:9 ratio. It's almost like another random-themed comp, so have fun with this.

EDIT: There's been some confusion on how to come up with the dimensions. Just know that they doesn't have to be strict multiples of 16 and 9. Here's an example: if I wanted to make a cave with the width of 100, I'd set up a proportion:
(100/x) = (16/9)
then you cross-multiply, so 900 = 16x, which means x = 56.25. So in the end, you've got the dimensions of 100x56. It might not perfectly resemble the 16:9 ratio, but it's close enough.

Click here for the post that released these results.

Final Results:
7th: Pride and Peril (HATPC) - jazz
4th: Unwanted Presence (HATPC) - Yaya
5th: Math Proportions (HATPC) - Ckjr
6th: Brain Killer (HATPC) - GF4
8th: lc (HATPC) - krotomo
1st: Surrender (HATPC) - Harumbai
2nd: Eternal Energy 1 (HATPC) - Teo
9th: Just a cave (HATPC) - a_neezles_a
3rd: Apocalypse (HATPC) - Cedric

Yeah, I don't think you can square it.

(16^2)/(9^2) >< 16/9

oh yeah, to keep a fraction equal, you have to multiply it by 1, and by squaring you multiply it by 16/9 instead.

I think what Accel is trying to say is that you must multiply or divide both parts of the fraction by the same number.
Example: 32:18 = (2 * 16) : (2 * 9) = 16:9 * 2:2 = 16:9
256:81 = (16 * 16) : (9 * 9) = 16:9 * 16:9 =/= 16:9

I think the lack of entries is due to people who don't know how multiples work being scared off.  =p

I should enter a comp one of these days; I don't think I ever have. Although currently I can barely summon up the inspiration to think up one trap, let alone a cave.

Anyway, it's nice to see that competition themes have evolved into things more interesting than "boulders".

"Platforms."

"Arrow crates."

"Terrain."

"HatPC."

Etc.

My closest dimensions divided to 1.66666, but 16/9 is 1.77777, so I guess I won't be entering.

I wonder why no one has even thought of making a simple level 16 tiles wide and 9 tiles tall. that would avoid any math problems...

I was thinking of doing that as a joke, actually, right as I opened this page. Then I decided, "That's really lame."

Lol, it's the CSD from the top-left of the cascades, pasted directly from that, except the very edge of the "D" gets cut off 'cause the cave is so small. Then the code got misaligned by the forums somehow.

And I'm not actually submitting that. Last time I made a joke submission, I got last. I didn't think it would bother me as much as it did... but... I...

Not really.

And no. I noticed it a while ago. I just didn't bother posting about it.

69! WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN!?!?

I'm hoping at least someone understands I'm making fun of "The number 23"...

We understood it the first time, you know, years ago. It's funny 'cause the whole joke started like the day after I first watched it.

I wrote a short story parodying the movie. The number 69.

I kept on making it as ridiculous as possible, constantly saying "WHAT DOES IT MEAN", enabling a double joke:

1. I'm making fun of the movie
2. Well, what does 69 mean.

Anyways, at the end I came up with this ridiculous conclusion, and said that I had to kill this specific person because his long hair made him look like a girl.

If I didn't leave it on the floor, I never would have ended up having to go to the guidance councilors office...

actually we have 7 entries so far. That's pretty good when you think back to the older comps were we could barely get 5.

...and this was such an easy comp too. -_-
