These days many Flash games have achievements. Like the achievements on the XBox360, the trophies on the PS3 or the avatars on Neopets. These vary from "Beat all of Felix's levels" or "Collect all gems" to "Play the game for a total of 3 hours" or "Beat Hugsy's first level without pressing a button". Trying to collect all these achievements usually gives the game a far larger playtime.
Another advantage is that we can use these to unlock hidden rewards. Such as unlocking Hugsy and the moon levels when completing all the main levels, unlocking the backstory for a character if you collect all the gems in that character's levels or unlocking a set of objects for the level builder when beating a level using that set.
Would such a thing be a good idea for Aeon? And if so, what achievements and rewards should we use?

I don't like the idea of having the level editor be unlockable -- they tried that in SSBB, but I guess they made it worse by making the unlock condition to build more levels, which is stupid. But I think we pretty much agreed, once, that we'd have achievements in our game. I think it's too early to decide what those would be, though. It's the type of thing you tack on once you get a better idea for the types of things you could achieve. | | Isa |

Didn't we already decide to include unlockables and achievements? I know that I suggested it even back at the Old Interguild...but of course, we should have it in Aeon.
I agree with CSD that the level editor should come full-fletched from the start. Thing is, we don't have a lot to unlock. Recolours could be pretty cool to unlock though. | | jellsprout |

I reposted this mainly because of Rosabellis's post in the Character Discussion. It would be fun to have a page about each character's background that you unlock this way. We could also already start some discussion on the type of achievements and rewards.
As for the level editor, I was doubting about that. You would obviously start with the level editor and the spaceship theme, but stuff like the jungle or cave themes would be unlocked. These achievements won't be difficult to unlock and the differences between the themes are mainly graphical. It would also be odd to start with Hugsy and the moon theme in the level editor before you even know they are be in the game.

jell has a point. It never fun having the game elements spoiled for you before you see them in the main game. But we could always warn people of this at the start of the campaign, can't we? | | canadianstickdeath |

Well since you can make whatever you want, it's not such a big deal if some of the pre-made stuff is unlockable, since you could just make it from scratch if you really wanted? | | nebnebben |

Personally I think you should get everything in the level editor from the start because it's really annoying in SM63 spending ages getting star coins to unlock new tiles

I think there should be achievements for a good Aeon level. Like, say, get a level that gets a 9/10 rating, or 3 +Karmas.

I think that would be too easy to cheat past. All you need is a few friends (or proxies) and you get the achievement. I think what jell's talking about is more for the main campaign, such as beating a certain level in a certain way, or maybe reaching a part of the level that wasn't intended to be reached. It's cool because it lengthens the life of the campaign. | | Silver |

Maybe we could do something like Sonic Color's Red Rings, where there's a few items hidden throughout a level, hidden in hard, secret or such places, and you get a reward if you find them all...? Like special gems, maybe. | | Livio |

you mean like hiding multiple gems throughout a level and giving players an achievement for finding them all? | | Silver |

Special gems, yes. They should be in difficult places to reach, as well. | | Livio |

It depends on how we choose to do the all secrets in the game. I get the feeling like something like that would lead to too much hidden stuff. | | Isa |

100% completion as in your beloved DKCR. Could be split up into multiple achievements (Beat 50% of game, beat 75%...). | | FlashMarsh |

For the Xbox 360, I am a bit of an achievment hunter. However, many of the achievments are soooo badly designed.
Examples.
You're the Best- Lego Harry Potter- 100% the Game
**** ******** ****!!! I am sorry, but this is just horrible. 100% a game should be because you enjoy a game, not because you want achievements.
Kill x with y- Tonnes of Games
Simply boring. Basically, whenever these came up, I gave myself 'y' (a gun), put myself on the easiest difficulty and ran in suicidally.
Good Achievment examples:
Solid Snape: Hide in a barrel a Snape.
Your Wish is Granted- Throw money into a well.
Achievements are, IMO, a lot more fun if they are imaginative and novelty. | | Livio |

but if we let people see which achievements other users have unlocked, having a 100% achievement could be your way of showing proof for getting 100% | | Quirvy |

What a vicious cycle.... anyways, we could throw in a few "beat level in under (amount of time)" awards or in other games I've played like some Super Monkey Ball installments, things could be completed normally, but have rewards for achieving the same goal in absurd/different ways. Pure Ex: Normal: You would use a boulder near the spikes to clear the way to the door. Absurd: Use the boulder found at the very start of the level for the same purpose. Just a thought.
COMING SOON: A giant meteor. Please.

Yaya, that's a great idea, but I feel like, rather than being an achievement, it should lead to secret areas, like gems and bonus levels | | |
