Yeah, a credit union around here, and then the interguild.ca were first for me. But it is the #1 site now, not that anybody searches just "interguild"

Wrong smilie.
SEARCH ENGINES DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY.
Google sees and remembers what you search for. If you search for Interguild, HatPC, jellsprout etc. a lot of times, Google will note that and give you the links you're most likely to visit, based on your search history, on top of the search. So if you constantly search for the Interguild and then click it, it will pop up higher the next time you search for it. | | shos |

I am saying this because this topic, and search, have been done on my work Mac. that's right, the first time ever anyone searched interguild there(I just opened up, F6, interguild, click. too lazy for the .org), we came first.

I know you can access all previous searches you made while logged into a google account.
The Interguild will probably never appear as first result in Canada or US because the layout has hundreds of errors. The layout also uses tables which are not meant to be used to display a layout. Tables are meant to display data and statistics and stuff and I'm pretty sure search engines try to ignore the stuff in tables if there's other stuff on the page and because everything displayed on this site is in a table, some important stuff can be ignored.

While I don't consider this to be particularly important...

So I went into incognito mode, searched interguild and we were the first result. I'm not totally sure, but I'm pretty sure that would be an unbiased search.
Also I rarely google interguild. interguild.org in the url bar is far easier

actually google uses a lot of data from you when you do a search. This includes but is not limited to: your google account (if you're logged in), your IP (which gives them geographical information), what time of day it is, your past search history, any other cookies google might have on you, etc. | | Thomas |

But you're absolutely right about me not using tables correctly. Maybe I should've formally learned HTML, CSS, and PHP before building the site (Haily should've learned it too). But hey, if it works.... | | Thomas |

Have you ever coded a layout using only CSS and divs? Obviously you would still need tables inside the divs to display some stuff like the navigation at the top or forum posts but divs are wayyy better (and valid) than tables. When you google "interguild", the description is "The Interguild Multi-Game Level Database · LEVEL DATABASE · Newest Levels · Top Rated Levels · Random Level · HATPC CaveList · Favorites · Upload ..." so that shows how bad search engines are at indexing table layouts. It doesn't help that you have no <meta> tag with a description for each page though. Inline CSS and JS scripts can mess up your search engine ranking too and slow down page load times because you have to load that stuff with every page so it's better to have all that stuff stored in another file. | | Livio |

although I never heard that invalid html can hurt your page rank. That's just discriminating against pre-existing conditions if you ask me. | | Isa |

Am I the only one who has absolutely no idea what the heck all of you are talking about?!
why would google look at the way the layout of a site is coded when deciding its rank in th search? as I said, anyways, in an unbiased, not logged in, random IP in isarel, we finally passed interguild.ca. be happy! stop ranting!

I'm sorry Livio, but I agree with Isa here. If you really write out the entire matrices instead of just using the divergence operator on a vector, I don't understand how you dare to show your face here.
But honestly, what does it matter how high we stand on the Interguild search results? Who will happen to stumble upon this site by using the Interguild search command without already knowing about it? The Hannah and the Pirate Caves search result is far more important, for which we are the 6th site on my search or Flash Game Level Database, for which we are 7th according to my search.

'Livio' said: although I never heard that invalid html can hurt your page rank. That's just discriminating against pre-existing conditions if you ask me. I'm pretty sure it's true because the HTML is so bad that google can't "read" the file as well and the ranking will go down. It's the webmaster's fault anyway for having the invalid HTML.

It's not that search engines don't LIKE invalid code, it can't be "read" as well as valid code and therefore will appear lower down in results.

It could make Livio validate his HTML and speed up site loading time because the browser won't have over 500 HTML errors to deal with. | | Kooler |
