Welcome to the 4th annual Interguild Olympics! One might describe the IO as being some kind of weird tournament, but it's really more like a big mess of competitions that are held somewhat simultaneously. It's during this event when some of the best and most memorable levels of the year will be made.

This year we have 15 contestants who have signed up so far, and they've been organized into the three balanced teams (listed below). Each team has been given its own private forum board so that they can collaborate in secret, and their first order of business is to come up with team names. Once that's done, the forums usually start to get filled with team-spirited shenanigans.

Ahoy! Womby Sharks!

Every week we'll have a number of new competitions (rounds). Just like with the real Olympics, no one is expected to join them all (unless you're shos). With so many competitions to join at any one time, people often make levels that fit the requirements for multiple rounds, which can really help you in the overall rankings. However, every team must have at least one entry in each round, or else they will be penalized for every round that they miss.

Here's the list of this week's new rounds:

IO 2012 - 30 Seconds!
Duration: One Week: Sunday, July 1st --- Sunday, July 8th
We've been doing a lot of things at the last minute lately and so should you. Make a level in HATPC that can be beaten in 30 seconds or less. We're talking about a single run-through, not how much time it takes to figure out the level. Due to variants in computer speeds, try to avoid getting too close to the 30-second mark. (There is a potential loophole, however, about levels that require the player to restart in order for them to be legitimately beaten, and I've decided to leave that loophole open.)

IO 2012 - Ride Some Lines
Duration: Two Weeks: Sunday, July 1st --- Sunday, July 15th
It's this year's obligatory obscure-game comp! You might not think of Line Rider as very obscure game, but considering that we haven't had much Line Rider activity on the Interguild since 2009, it's obscure enough. For this comp, make any level in Line Rider, then film it, and submit the video as your entry.

IO 2012 - Wide Open Caving
Duration: Three Weeks: Sunday, July 1st --- Sunday, July 22nd
You'd think that with Thomas' great discovery last winter that we would have had more HATPC comps this year. Perhaps all we really needed was some real level design inspiration, so the premise for this comp is to make levels with big, open spaces. It seems like claustrophobic level design seems to be the norm with HATPC, and so it can be a real breath of fresh air when a level has plenty of open space for the player to move around in. This idea won't work very well if the open space is meaningless, however, so make sure to use it in a way that actually helps your levels.

IO 2012 - Build a Statue
Duration: Three Weeks: Sunday, July 1st --- Sunday, July 22nd
I'm one of those people who thought shos' Egypt-themed Minecraft Comp was kinda lame. This theme is a little more open-ended: build a statue on the creative world (Different) on our Minecraft Server. World Edit is not allowed in order to level the playing field. I'm hoping people will be more creative with this comp rather than making a bunch of generic statues that look like guyguy's statue on D52 Bridge. Maybe you'll decide to make a building that just happens to be a statue? Maybe you'll make a 2D statue in the form of pixel art? Maybe you'll make something almost as awesome as Sprout Tower?

IO 2012 - Collaborate
Duration: Four Weeks: Sunday, July 1st --- Sunday, July 29th
The team collab round has always been a staple of the IO, but rather than having the teams produce one big level that represents their team, we're going to make the requirement for this round much more simple: make a level with at least one other person. You can still make the huge team level if you want, or you might be able to get more points by making better smaller levels. You can even collaborate with non-team members if you want to.

And now all that's left is to light to torch:

No. As with every other competition on the site, you can only enter one level per round. The only exception to this are the colleboration competitions, where you are allowed to collaborate with different people.
