Here's a cool idea: we make an award for levels that are "Classics". And then every other Sunday, or every month something (depending on how exclusive you want to make such a thing), we make a news post, where we award another old level as a "Classic".

It'll basically be just another award, like a competition award, and after I reform the award system, I'll let you search levels based on it too. Like I said, I don't know how exclusive we'd want to make the award, but I'd like to have it pretty often (like every other every week) because then more levels are added, and more are featured. But of course, a level has to be about a month or two old to be considered for the award, b/c the point of it is to look back at good old levels. And the more old levels we look back to, the better.

I'd say the levels should be at least a year old to be concidered a classic.
As for the idea itself, I'm neutral towards it.

I think that a definition for 'classic' is very hard to come by. I suppose it'd be a cave that was memorable or famous for some reason.

Csd has produced too many classics... lol.

yeah, I was just thinking that maybe we should call it something other than "classics" if we're going to make it too frequent.

I think a year is too extreme of a minimum. Maybe six months.

Yes, there is something as an 'instant classic' apparently... I'm not over-fussed by the idea; I'll just sit back and watch you pick out the coolest caves from the last five years.

actually that's a pretty good definition. Not every level would have to be super awesome. But as long as it's memorable and worthy...

The Cascades is a dead cert. Cave of Speed is a possibility. Legos Gone Bad. Off the top of my head, they stand out as memorable caves and not always because of their quality. Some of these classics may have been ground-breaking at the time, but nothing special now. We should bear that in mind.

so how often would we add a level to the classics? Every week? every other week? I think every month is too far apart, though.

Btw, would any mod like to claim this task, so that I wouldn't have to do it? I really have no problem running it myself (in fact, I'd enjoy it) but the less things run by me the better. And it'll add a new common name to the news posts

I think Quirvy should do something; he's a regular on here, but could contribute more.

And once a fortnight will do it.

but the problem is that he never gets anywhere in any levels. but then again, there may be walkthroughs by the time they are eligible for classic-ness. And he doesn't have to make the post every single time. And we can even start a topic on the staff forum for suggestions on the next classic

The Cascades, Bribe and Massacre, Fiery Skyscraper and Imperio should be the first. No doubt about that.

not like it matters which one is first. I think a good idea would be to put them in a strange order, so that every now and then an interesting one will come up instead of just the obvious ones

I think uries_neo's caves should have a feature. I still see them as beautiful caves that should be worshipped before being played.

we'd have to take them out of the cavelist and add them to the level database, though. but that's a pretty good idea. We'll have tons and tons of eligible classics already

I'm against this.

Just sort by highest rated. Done.

Speaking of which, when searching for levels, I think seeing the number of ratings is very important. That's a lot better than having "classics."

I disagree about highest rated caves. Some people rate caves high for different reasons. Look at Chaos Theory, which is a pretty poorly designed cave, but got loaded with high ratings. Only the caves that stand out in peoples' memories should be highlighted. That's what makes them special.

Plus having a 'classics list' is a nice little gimmick.

you can the see number of votes by rolling over the rate. It's a little obscure, but I don't think I should put another row just for numbers of votes. because it's already looking kinda cluttered.

anyway, yeah, what jebby said. So right now the idea is to (once the awards system is reformed/setup), we'll have news post every two weeks (preferably on Sunday), which will announce that another level has been added to the classics list, and then it'll talk about the cave and maybe should a screenshot or something.

I don't think you should make it once every two weeks, it should be whenever you have decided what is worthy of becoming classic status rather than a forced thing and I don't think they neccessarily need to come out one at a time just small groups because otherwise it will take years to even cover some of them.

if that's the case, then we might as well make it every week. it's more interesting that way at least.

and I'd like it if its main purpose would be to look back at older levels, instead of it being like: "shos just made an epic cave! we're making it a classic right now!" It'd be cooler if it made you think back to older levels, especially to help people find some great levels that they may have missed at one time

Personally, I'd like to see "Treasure Hunting". Either that or "Trapped in the Dark". I remember those caves like they were made yesterday sometime long before I was born.

One of these days I'm gonna use the map to recreate TitD....

Actually, I vaguely remember CLS writing a program to do just that.

You're gonna do it just to make sure everyone can laugh at me for making so horrible caves in the past Although, it's still better than some caves around here...

I guess I should revamp the awards system so we could get this idea running. But wait, who will mainly be running it?
