Or it could be like a sudoku comp where none of 8 tiles surrounding a tile can be the same.

It seems like you guys are just suggesting ideas without really thinking about them. Although, that's not really a bad thing, because even ideas that don't work can inspire other ideas, so I'm not going to advise you to think before you suggest. So basically just ignore this first paragraph.

The sudoku comp wouldn't be very practical. Remember that an empty space counts as a tile, as does terrain. This would likely fail epically.

Maybe if you made it so that terrain and empty spaces did not count as tiles, but I still have a feeling that would not work well.

What would be more likely to work would be if no two of the same tiles could touch each other. This may or may not affect diagonally touching tiles.

While we're at it, a second parody comp might not be a bad idea soon.

And another idea is to have a comp where you mock the style of another cavemaker. Like if someone was doing Catta, they might make their caves really easy. If someone was doing shos, they would make theirs impossibly hard. If someone was doing mine, they would make a really complicated layout that no one could figure out. If someone was doing Dando, they would make their cave actually fun. If someone was doing CSD, they just plainly wouldn't make a cave. You get the idea...

Haha, I've made one of these.

If you are looking for a cave which is impossible (maybe almost impossible heh)  to die, check out this one. http://www.interguild.org/levels/?id=433

I came up wih some seriously difficult competition ideas that were all really strange. I think one was something about every tile having to touch another one the same as it.
What if we had some kind of "strange" comp where it's just a bunch of super weird limits like this.

That's actually a cool idea. But hard. Maybe if such a comp was limited to small caves? (or just recommend that people enter small caves--actually, if we recommended small caves in every comp, we'd have more people participating)

goldfun suggested making a monkey comp for HATPC, where you have to use the monkey enemy in a significant way. He's been making a ton of monkey levels, if you haven't noticed. Anyway, it's sounds like a good theme for the next comp

Sounds fun. It'll definitely be a challenge for me, as I have close to no experience including enemies in my caves.

An idea for a future competition: Create a cave template with a terrain design, and only terrain, and have the contestants use that same template to make their own unique cave. The rules prohibit adding, deleting, or changing any terrain, but all else is fair game.

we tried that once, but the template I made was ridiculously huge and the rules to probably too strict. Lol, but we should try that again...

What about a comp where you have to use particular sorts of "jigsaw pieces" effectively. Eg there are these combos

Code:
/^ k<k bxb
bv  =+v kw@

And the caves that implements these in the most traps in clever ways wins.

assuming there are three pieces in that code block, that's a really cool idea. The only problem is that it's hard.

Hey what if for the IO we use all these weird ideas? Maybe not as individual categories, but as an odd tournament running alongside the IO where each round you have to fulfill difficult challenges like this.

Ha, not a tournament, please. Individual contests are so much more fun, in my opinion.

That said, most of the ideas people are bashing aren't bad ideas. An impossible to die level could be plenty of fun. The only difference between it, and a level that kills you, would be having the game restart for you, or having to press the "restart" button. It might also be tricky to make, but that's the point of competitions!

Also, the idea of HAVING to die is kind of awesome too. Like in CSD's Not_What_U_Expect_2. That's definitely my favorite level of all time, and it works like that.

A monkey competition is a weird idea, but would be fun to make. That's always good, haha.

Lastly, the jigsaw puzzle could be fun too.

I like all of my mentioned ideas. Some of the others could work too, but I likely wouldn't join them. They're just weird, haha. Besides, you can make a couple of these into competitions, and not post a new "contest ideas" thread for a while. That way you don't need to choose the best out of a bunch of good ideas.
