so we have roughly one month left until July and we should start coming up with what each round will be.
For those who don't know, the Interguild Olympics are a collection of competitions held in July and August. Last year they were released in phases, where maybe 3 or 4 would start one week, and then the next the following week. I'm not sure if we want to do that again, or if we just want to release them all at once? But the idea behind the Olympics is that you don't have to join every single category. You're free to enter whatever you want into whichever category, and you can even enter the same level into multiple categories if its eligible.
This is the list of categories from last year, with the ones that didn't go so well crossed off:
1) IO '09: Large HATPC Levels
2) IO '09: Small HATPC Levels
3) IO '09: Best N Levels (it did ok, but most levels were bad)
4) IO '09: Best Freestyle Video
5) IO '09: Automatic Levels & Line Rider Videos
6) IO '09: Speed levels
7) IO '09: Best Walkthrough Video
8) IO '09: Puzzle-Themed Levels
9) IO '09: Best Free Rider 2 Level
I suggested in the "idea for comps" topic that maybe we could take all of the weirder, hard ideas and make a mini-tournament out of it, one that would run throughout the course of the Interguild Olympics. And unlike the rest of the IO, if you enter this mini-tournament, you must make an entry for every round (although there should be a size limit, to keep the entries small and quick) because these will be some hard challenges. I guess it would be reminiscent of the Interguild Challenge Tournament that was held long, long, ago on the old site. | | Harumbai |

What about a knytt stories section?

but would it go very well? most members still have yet to even try the game. We could open a category for it to raise awareness, but they would probably be too distracted by the other sections to put the effort into downloading and trying the game out, unfortunately.
But if there was a knytt stories section hidden in that mini-tournament idea....... | | imtimi |

For the mini-tournament of unique and challenging competitions, you could make it so that each competition is like a round: Each round can earn a certain amount of points, and then at the end, the person with the highest total scoring wins the tournament. If you do it this way, then people wouldn't be required to enter every single division, but they'll lose a lot of potential points if they don't. An idea for a round would be (HATPC) where all of the tiles on the grid have to be filled, the rules prohibiting the use of tutorial arrows.

This is where releasing competitions every week or so takes effect. If you release all of the competitions at once, people will ignore the games they're less familiar with. But releasing competitions every week will make the competitors focus on that week's game(s), and maybe in result an underrated game will gain some spotlight. Seeing that the Interguild is meant to be an acceptance of a wide variety of games, it'd probably be a good idea to focus some of these competitions on lesser known games. | | Livio |

but also the rounds that start the earliest will probably be the ones that demand the most time, such as the Hard HATPC levels and the Video Walkthroughs. Or we could risk it and push those to the second week, while devoting the first week to the lesser-knowns. Actually, that could turn out to be interesting, as long as people turn out to be open to the other games rather than just ignoring the first week altogether... | | Teo |

Do we have to do everything the same way we did it before? Can't we change it up? Let's actually go with the sports themes that we were originally going to use for the first IO, lol. We could mix together the broad comps like in the old IO with the more-specific comps, perhaps with sport-themed names.
I like this tournament idea. We could mix together all the games in a way we haven't gone before, and use up some of those crazy themes that we never thought we'd actually use. I wonder if running it along side the IO might be a little much? Whatever, just throw it in with the rest and call it the "decathlon". I'd like to have a list of people who would be willing to put forth a good effort into each of the themes (which the participants won't know about before hand, which means if any staff wants in, they better say before we start coming up with them) before we go ahead with such an ambitious comp. | | Yaya |

Ok, I'll throw a couple ideas at you:
Some sort of Red Remover Comp
An Ambreial Axis Comp
Water Hatpc Levels (no size restriction)
Wildcard Hatpc comp (no restrictions, period)
The last idea could be "Flash Comps", short lasting comps, focusing on strange themes or unpopular games that if you win, you get karma and a trophy.
That tournament does sound cool though.

So the Wildcard Comp would basically be a freeform comp? | | FlashMarsh |

remember my original peace negotiation idea for the karma war? We could still do that anyway.
Basically, going off of the whole Olympics theme of people joining whatever categories they want, we could make it so that each participant tries to win the most categories for whatever "country" they represent. However, instead of countries, we could have factions, like the KarmaBots and the Livioists-- or we could come up with entirely new factions since the karma war is supposedly over. We could also use a third group, as imtimi suggested: a group of Independents for anyone who doesn't want to join any particular group.
Also, you decide your group when you enter your first competition entry, and after that you can't change it. And then at the end of the IO you get trophies for whichever faction you supported, if they win. | | FlashMarsh |

Countries or States instead of Factions.
Eg. Guyguyxtreme: UK, Livio: Arizona, Isa: Sweden, Evan: Singapore
The Knytt Sories section would not work because it take ages to create a level. | | Isa |

Then I would represent Sweden alone, while I'm outnumbered easily only by the users from the Vancouver area. Better to side with one side, regardless of location. | | jellsprout |

So that would be 5 or so people for US, 4 or so for Canada, 3 for Singapore and the other countries each get 1. Not really fair.
However, I do like the factions. For the more difficult games, such as KS and ZC you could have the entire faction make a single level. Perhaps a faction led by Quirvy, one by Isa and one by Dando.

I won't even be able to enter the Olympics, or at least, I'll be gone during the most of it. I'm away to three different places 28 June --> 20 July, and 30 July --> 14 August, I'll be in Austria. While I'd love to lead a fraction otherwise, I can't do it this time. | | Yaya |

We could just make up random teams. Like team Orange, team Uzbekistan, Team Prostethetic Limb etc...

We should name our teams either after Interguild events or Internet memes. Team Ekehasa, Team Ruby the Brave etc., or Team Trololo, Team Rick Astley, Team Facepalm, and so on. | | Yaya |

but how many teams should we have? Maybe keep it small, around three, to decrease the chances of any one team not having a lot of people.
possible team suggestions:
Team WIN / Team FAIL ??
The Facepalm Team, is a good idea
Team More Topics Button, lol
Team Interbot
Captain Obvious Team
{Fuchsia-Green Team
Team NEUTRAL, for independents | | Isa |

Three teams sounds good enough.
One of the members of the team should be team captain and organize the making of a collaborative level, that at least two thirds of the members of the team must be part of. The level may be one from any game, but HatPC may be the easiest. | | Livio |

If we're having team captains, sounds like the captains will inevitably be staff members.
and we're gonna make collab levels mandatory? We could just have a collab category.
So so far, for IO 2010, we're have:
-three teams, with players trying to win awards not just for themselves, but also for their teams
-an to-be-determined number of categories which may be sports-related/inspired
-one "category" that will be a tournament that will run throughout the IO presenting players with small, weird challenges. | | snowman |

Quote: If we're having team captains, sounds like the captains will inevitably be staff members
Why must captains be staff members? In a school, the group leaders are not necessarily the prefects
I'd say give the standard registered users a chance to lead something, provided they do it well

or we could make it so that the team captains are elected, but of course, we're gonna have to start setting up and joining teams right now so that they have time for elections. But wait, do we even need team captains? | | snowman |

We should, so someone can organize all the ideas and facts, plan what to do, etc..
Otherwise it would probably be a big mess.
