Is it possible to also provide a mobile version to distribute on the App Store or on the Android thing?

The vast majority of people who say that Flash is dead and that HTML5 is the future have no experience with working in either of the two platforms. They have no idea how absurdly complicated and expensive it is to develop for HTML5, and that the amount of users who can run Flash programs is still larger than the amount who can run HTML5 pages. The reason Flash won't die anytime soon is because it continues to be one of the most reliable and easy-to-develop-for platforms with the largest audience.

I don't really like the idea of cancelling Aeon. I've made so many mistakes while making it that I feel like I'm only a few steps away from actually being able to make it now. The main reasons why I restarted the project a few times was because the programming was horrible and a restart was the best thing to do. Now, I've realized that the design and development approach were horrible and super unpractical, so now I'm thinking that the only way to complete Aeon is to start over in a sense with a smaller scope and a smarter development strategy.

I mentioned this in one of my blog posts that Aeon's development was basically following the waterfall model, which is basically the same as having no plan. It's kinda a good thing that I put Aeon on hold for several months and took the chance to work on some other game projects because they've really helped me to master the iterative development model, which focuses a lot on playability and really helps you maintain your design perspective. Under that model, I'd most likely be coming out with a new Aeon demo every week or two, rather than every several months.

That's assuming you'd work on Aeon for some weeks in a row...is that even a likely scenario?

If Aeon is in flash, if the need be, I could learn it, and help. I already know Java, and C++.

I'd like to think my supervisor's view is fairly reliable; he is an industry veteran whose research area is web standards (he's probably a bit biased though as he's done a lot of work with W3C on HTML over the years). Flash is certainly the preferred form at the moment, but I'm pretty confident HTML5 will eventually overtake it in terms of power and functionality (and accessibility); at least I hope it does for the reason I gave earlier. It's kind of a similar reason to why I favour Android over Apple; Apple products are awesome, but under the leash of a single company.

Out of interest, why is it complicated and expensive to develop with HTML5? Sure, there's some browser compatibility issues, but only really with old IE versions as far as I know.

It would be kind of a shame if all your work went to waste. Even if Aeon doesn't attract any people or hit it big in the world of Flash games, it'll still be fun for us to play and good practise for you in terms of developing your own software. I wish I had the discipline to stick to a development strategy; I still pretty much wing it...

I agree that HTML5 will eventually overtake Flash. But the keyword here is eventually. I do not see it happening for the next few years. And even then it won't fully replace Flash. It will be a very, very long time before developers stop supporting Flash. At the moment Flash is the better option and it will remain a perfectly viable option for a very long time.

Here's a good article about the hype surrounding HTML5:

That's also one of the sites that I learned ActionScript game programming from.
