I've updated the homepage. The Featured Content box is 40 pixels wider (which took forever to get it to work right ), and there's even more featured content beneath the box. You may notice that there are now three less news posts displayed, one less newest level, one less newest video, and the comps info has been moved to the right column.

Most important with this update is the fact that I'm changing the way we run the featured content. Instead of all of it getting updated at the posting of the weekly updates, I will update it throughout the week, adding cool stuff as I come across it, which will hopefully make the site feel more active. I had to change the whole editable-by-staff system so that adding the content would push down older ones. The original idea of the sub-featured content area was so that when content gets pushed out of the box, it would then flow into the sub-featured area. But I got rid of that idea, because then that area would be filled with stuff that's already been featured and no one would pay attention to it after a while.

So instead, the sub-featured area will be updated independently of the main area. Right now it only shows past featured content, but it will be used to show things that either couldn't fit at the top, or just don't deserve to be up there. Anyway, comment what you think

- I'd just have the sub-featured area randomly choose from previously featured content? You could make this automatic, and then you wouldn't have to maintain the sub-featured section.
- Can we link this stuff to the levels? It'd be nice to include the smaller image in the search and the larger image somewhere on the levels page. If possible, it'd be nice to be able to link the featured content to just about anything...
- Why not allow users to browse through previously featured content? Can you retroactively add all the previously featured content to the newish system?
- The staff page could use some paging, because that could very quickly become a lot of images to have to load at once.

I imagine that there are some people who come to the site only for levels and don't care at all about posts, so it could be cool if when they checked the homepage, it looks like a featured levels thing that actually does get updated frequently and that it's not just a randomizer that shows past featured content. Because then they would be more interested in looking at it each time. I also like how it features some of the most recently made levels, with occasional classics, as opposed to just pulling out random ones from the database.

I was thinking of a way to use those images like that, but it wouldn't make much sense unless all the levels have images, which is something I'm interested in doing but so far haven't found any ways of doing it that would be practical. I want to know if there's any way I can make a computer load a page (like the HATPC preview generator) and then take a screenshot, resize it, and save it. Teh Marz mentioned an idea of doing that for the cavelist levels, and it would be cool if we could do it for the HATPC levels in the database.

I remember I had an idea to give all featured levels some kind of award or distinction so that you could browse through all the levels that have been featured. I originally labeled the idea as "classics" and it was before the featured content thing came into being, I think. But we could do something like that.

I didn't add pagination because I assumed maybe we would start deleting outdated items, but I never thought of saving them to be used later.

I was just thinking that the images would be a sort-of bonus for having made the featured content, as well as a way to tell whether or not a level (or whatever) has been featured...?

Eh, whatever.

I really like the new homepage. The fact that it puts more emphasis on featured content, which can be anything around the site, can get more people to explore the different areas of the site, even if they're new or don't have an account.

?? I was expecting you to edit that post-killing typo, but so far you haven't edited it, and I still don't know what you were saying.

Ahem...
I think we need just a bit more featured content (maybe about 8) because I think we need to give visitors a larger view into our closely-knit mittens of our community.

lol

That's actually what I was trying to address by updating the content more frequently. I didn't feel like adding more room for more to be shown at once, so instead, I'll just update it more often. AND there's ten more, sub-featured content underneath it.

I know, but we need flashy stuff for the featured content and some tame stuff for it. It's like trying to make drinkable salt-water with hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide: you need everything to be added in the right quantities (as accurate as a dosage of medicine) or else it will not work out. Plus, you have the reaction. Wait, what am I talking about? Oh, yes, the New Homepage Updates. They're okay.

lol what kind of analogy was that? but the "tame stuff" is another purpose for the sub-featured content.
