This was definitely not the result that I was expecting.

I always knew there was a good chance things would turn out this way, but it was easier to tell myself otherwise to avoid getting swallowed by the existential terror. As a resident of a swing state, I did my part in trying to prevent it, but at the end of the day, it made no difference. I'm sorry

It's okay Yaya, I don't hold you personally responsible! It's done now and we just have to hope for the best possible outcome given this new outlook - maybe it won't be as utterly awful as everyone expects, but I'm not hugely hopeful.

Well, it probably won't be as awful as people are saying. And I think a lot of the doomsday talk is in jest. The truth is, the US president doesn't have all that much power. Congress holds the real power. Anything Trump wants to do, he has to get it past congress, so removing women's right or implementing racist policies is probably not gonna fly, at least not in blatant ways.

This is a doomsday in a way - it helps show how scared people are of accepting that we do face consequences for what we do to the planet and to each other. And how much of a fight it will take for everyone to accept that.

I know the world isn't going to end or anything (where's that giant meteor when you need it?), but things will get worse. No, the president doesn't have all the power, but with both houses of congress now being republican controlled, I don't see there being too much push back on a lot of policy.

At the bare minimum, there's gonna be a conservative supreme court. Beyond that, there will likely be healthcare changes, Planned Parenthood defunding, erosion of voter rights/personal freedoms, giving lgbt people hell, and horrible stuff for Muslims and Mexicans.

Furthermore, his campaign has helped make white supremacy the most mainstream its been in the US in a long time. I wouldn't surprised if more congressmen decided to reveal their true colors.

As much as I disagree with Trump's ideals, I don't believe that the country will be changed quite as much as all my Facebook friends seem to think. His campaign rhetoric is just that—rhetoric. While in office, I doubt that he will actually deviate far from the typical GOP platform. Even with a Republican-controlled House and Senate, it won't be the end of the world by any means.

If the Supreme Court decides to overturn Obergefell v. Hodges, you still have to remember that 36 states had previously allowed same-sex marriage to varying degrees. Furthermore, I imagine that increasing public pressure for legalization outweighs any opposition (at least by a small margin) in most/all of the other 14 states. I dunno about healthcare, but Planned Parenthood should continue to get some state funding, even if it loses monetary support from the federal level. And even with a Republican government I don't think we'll be seeing mass deportations or anything; they aren't all crazy.

Perhaps this is a bit naïve, but I'd prefer not to sink into cynicism for the next four years.

I think that state and local elections aren't taken seriously enough. Instead of being obsessed by the presidential race in 2020, I'll see if there are any good Pirate candidates running for the state legislature.
