The thing with the door light at the end of the demo level was pretty legit, I am impressed

This looks very awesome. I will think about whether I want to make my level in a hannah game or in this,.

Also, it'd be nice if a row of arrows/tnt didn't detonate all at once

This is gonna be weird but I recently got a game making engine that uses LUA script to make immersive 3d games (the software is Leadwerks, available on steam) and I was wondering if anyone would be interested if, as I learn the program, I made a 3D version of Aeon with 3D models and made it like less of a flash game and more of a steam type indie game. Basically my question is, if I devoted my time to this would anyone be interested in it? It would likely be available on steam as an indie game, but remember, this is all a stretch goal.

Jesus, people actually buy those engine things on Steam? Think of all the games you could've bought with that $59.99. I'll be frank; I have zero interest. Not stopping you, though

Have you thought about whether a HATPC/Aeon-type game would translate well to 3D? I suspect not. I think Aeon was meant to add the bells and whistles to HATPC that we had all wanted - I don't think many people really want an entirely different game. I think HATPC-likes are best-suited to simpler web-based platforms. Doesn't have to be Flash. I'm sure you could make something pretty cool with HTML5 Canvas or WebGL. With regards to the gamemaker, just make something that is fun for you. | | kinectking |

Yeah that's a good point. I felt it was a good opportunity to learn the program with some type of base line, while still producing something fun, although I suppose I really didn't think about how the game would translate to this new format. Thanks for the insight
Also yaya, I only bought it because it was massively on sale (like 70 percent off)

Ah, I didn't realize the community choice sale price was over by the time I saw it. $33.99 is a bit more understandable than $59.99. Still I don't think I'd buy anything-- game, game engine, cosmetic hat off of Steam for that much.

I tried it and was pretty impressed with how smooth it was. The one big issue I have with it is that we should be able to outrun dynamite exploding to be able to really create any effective traps. There needs to be some delay between an explosion happening, and it breaking the boxes around it.
It's a shame it never got to the point that we wanted; we didn't even fully catch up to everything HatPC had. But at least we have steel arrows!
Nonetheless, congratulations on making a game as polished and functional as this.

This.
I was afraid to broach that subject, but fine. As grateful as I am for Livio's time and dedication that he took to make the game, I never see myself making a level for it. The demo plays really well, the art style is nice, and it's good to see a mostly-one man project come to fruition but sadly at the end of the day it's just kind of a HATPC knockoff. And since I have zero motivation to make HATPC levels, I likewise have pretty much zero drive to do anything with this game.
Hefty "no offense". Everywhere

in actuality the last time i played Aeon was in its early stages several years ago with all the weird gravity stuff and glitches galore and it was so very unfamiliar. but yo when i started playing it earlier i was mad in awe at how much it has changed. it runs super smoothly and the physics and sprite graphics are basically perfect. honestly 3 years ago i had very little confidence that Aeon was gonna turn out anything like this.

i'm kinda indifferent to this. it was weird before i realized that in the demo, the more arrows or dynamite you put in a row actually make the trap or whatever run faster as opposed to in HatPC where consecutive arrows slowed it down.
but yeah, aeon is like ideal right now. at least in my opinion. | | Livio |

haha I'm surprised by some of this positive feedback.
There are still a few glitches with respect to arrows and explosions, and I didn't get as much time to polish their timing either. Boulders are also technically in the game, but I just didn't finish implementing boulder stacking and its various cases, so I cut it out. There's also no gems, ladders, enemies, or any water at all.
I decided to formally end the project because I sensed that it was dying and I wanted to make an effort to "finish" it, rather than simply letting the project die and never seeing the light of day. There were several issues leading to the end of the project. One of which was simply my own stamina, since it's really hard to keep a project going by yourself for more than a few months. I was also being pulled away by a desire to work on games for other platforms and languages, since I feel like I've pretty much gotten everything that I can out of Flash and want to start building up more experience in things like C++ to help with future job applications.
The other issue was the fact that HATPC has kinda been dying on this site lately. Many of us veteran members don't really play it anymore, and I really doubt that Aeon would really revitalize our interest in the game, even if it was a perfect recreation with all of the extra stuff. Yeah, we'd probably play it, but not for long, I suspect. I feel like our interest with HATPC is mostly a nostalgic one these days, as our interests and taste continue to change as we grow up.
Those are the main reasons why I've been losing motivation and why I decided to respond by formally putting the project down and moving on.

Nicely done Livio! It's too bad we didn't get further with it, but it feels more complete than I was expecting it to. The Play User Levels feature is awesome.
You're right that our interest in HatPC is diminishing, but actually, the things I like most about Aeon are what make it different from HatPC. Like when an arrow falls on your head and it goes off a tile above instead of killing you. It's cool to see it as its own game with its own nuances to figure out rather than as a HatPC clone with some extra bells and whistles (which is what it was in my head for most of its life). It could just be that I was always anticipating more updates, but it never really felt polished or realized enough to be its own 'thing' until now. Kudos again for taking it so far. | | GF4 |

I must say, visiting this site out of curiosity for old times sake and seeing this made me quite happy. It thrills me to see what you were able to accomplish with Aeon but also makes me sad knowing it won't go any farther. I wish you the best of luck on your future endeavours, Livio.

What's a good dev environment for building an ActionScript app? Tools/IDEs/etc? I've heard that some of them are quite expensive, though I've seen FlashDevelop. Can I write ActionScript in a normal text editor like Atom and run it from the command line?
Would be nice to fork Aeon and play with the code. | | |
