The series also originated much tie-in merchandise, making the Harry Potter brand worth in excess of $15 billion.

Really now... I guess it's because it's used the most and then it just becomes habit.
Seems like every kids' book uses it, and then it just gets ingrained in our minds.

See, the problem is that you guys aren't being consistent. In kooler's post about harry potter, all of his sentences did not follow the alphabet rule. some do, some don't, so we need to be consistent for this topic to stay alive.

Truth be told, I think it should just be the first letter of every post, not every sentence. Unfortunately, not everyone can follow the pattern with all their sentences, so we should avoid it for the sake of nondiscrimination.

Back in the old days, it was established that if someone continued to start paragraph/new lines with the following letters of the alphabet, that the next poster could either ignore the other paragraphs, or continue at the last paragraph.

Chezerony on the other hand... Well, I don't know what that was...
