I have had an idea; why don't we develop a freeware game (of course it will be hosted on a place with ads that we will be payed for, such as a free .tk domain with a host that has a great FTP service) with freeware tools, unless if it's a cheap tool you already have or something you have to do in real life that costs a little bit (such as scanning, because a printer costs money, but that shouldn't count).  It may boost activity and it may even attract new members.  Also, this won't be like Aeon.  Oh dear that would be horrible.  This project will be open sourced, free, and made by the entire community.  Even if you can't code, then you can participate (artwork, storyline, ect.).  And if you want to learn, then I shall make a directory of sites that you can learn from for free.  And also, this could be great practice if you already know how to make a game, because you can just mess around in it.

Do you guys think this would be a good idea?  I mean, you can't say "well, I don't have enough time", because this project will take awhile.

Spring break starts in two-ish weeks for me, but I'm all for starting. Am I the only coder in the team?

Okay, now first we need to start writing, so let's start with a small story.

Before we can start we need to get organized. To make it clear what it is we all need to do.
First of all we need a project leader. Someone who directs the project, tells everyone what to do and set the deadlines. This person must also take the responsibility for the entire project. If the project stops for any reason, it is this person's fault. If nobody else volunteers for this position, I will take it, but I'd rather not.
Also before we can start, everybody who wants to join this project needs to post here, tell what their skills and how much free time they have available.
And third, a nice thing to know beforehand is what we are even making here. What genre of game will this be, what sort of graphics will there be used, what language or program will be used to make this game in?

We can't just jump into things. If we don't get this organized, the entire project is doomed before it has even begun.

I get what's the game is. A basic text adventure. In the text, there is a scenario and a problem like you need to solve the mystery. In the text, we need to describe things in that room. In the bottom of the game. There is a type bar and the player needs to type a thing described in that room. Like this.

Ex:
You lived in a wonderful palace but the evil witch trapped you in a tower with a breaked wall in the east and a sledge hammer. What will you gonna do.
Type your action:
Use hammer

Result: You used your hammer and BOOM! The wall collapsed and escape it is!

YOU WIN!

Is that a basic adventure text game?

It's good to be back.

Unless you want the game to spam "I don't understand that command" all the time, I think that will actually get pretty complicated.

Unless there are many possible answers like use hammer, use sledge hammer, pick up hammer .... etc?

Buboy, that would be Incredibly tedious. As I think I'm the only coder, id have to be constantly typing the same code over and over again.

Ohyeah, I can code

Well that's a classic text based rpg, so it's not that farfetched. Also, I'll repost that i already have a code base for this type of game. I could even take a day or two and make an interpreter for loading levels if you want.

I don't want to be in on this project, but maybe you should have a few options, you shouldn't be able to type in exactly what you want, maybe 3 or 4 possible selections pop up and you type in what the one you want to select has written in it.

@jell that is indicative of a poorly designed parser and/or poorly communicating command syntax to the user. You don't need a complete natural language processor to make a classic trpg enjoyable.

EDIT:
I thought I'd elaborate instead of coming of as a jerk.

Here's an example of how a well designed game of this type works:

A man approaches you. "Welcome to Psiland, jellsprout! Is this your first time playing Psiland?" (Yes/No)
>yes

"Well then, let me introduce myself! I'm Sniper, the friendly tour guide. I'm here to help you learn the basics.
First things first: let's go somewhere a little quieter. For now, just type
'move east'."
>move east

You move east and enter a small grove with a path running of into the distance. In the middle is a single tree with some missing branches. You think you might be able to climb the tree.
Sniper says "Do you see how some words are in yellow and some are in cyan? Yellow words indicate objects that you can interact with. Blue or cyan words indicate actions you can perform. There are some actions that you can always perform and some that depend on where you are. For instance, you can always try to use an item you are carrying or that is in the world, but you can't always try to climb things. Try typing 'actions' for a list of things you can do."
>actions

Actions:
use, move, say, hide, attack, examine, status, help, actions, look
climb

Sniper says "Actions in blue are context sensitve; you can't always do them. Actions in cyan are context insensitive; you can always try them."
Sniper says "Why don't you examine those branches on the ground? Type 'examine branches'."
>examine branches

The branches appear to have been ripped off the tree. Maybe someone who was too heavy tried climbing the tree and the branches snapped off.
Sniper says "Hey, that tree looks like it's pretty easy to climb. Why don't you give it a try?"
>climb tree

You start to climb the tree. About halfway up, one of the branches breaks, and you fall and break your neck.
Sniper laughs.
Sniper says "You shouldn't trust strangers when you're in Psiland, kid."

I was wondering that too, but I decided that if it doesn't I'm never going to play it. For me, text-adventure games are relatively dull as a result of their habit of being music-free.

I am interested in a coding aspect, or a playtesting aspect. (;
But before I commit to anything coding, I want to find out what language it will be in.
Finally, that offer for using my site is still there, if need be.

I'd like Java, but I'm willing to learn for other things, whatever everyone else is comfortable with.

@Sniper- That's better than what I was thinking of.

Thing with music, is that the music has to go with the general theme of the game. Also, I think with most text-based rpg games, they use 8-bit soundtracks to give it a retro feel. I don't know if that's what you're looking forrrrrrrjifnsuiofj?

Well if this is going to be a text-adventure game then yeah, a retro feeling would need to be put into place.
