Every three year old knows when two lines intersect. Mathematicians however, need a page long definition of an intersection. well yeah. the fifth axiom of the euclidean geometry states and for every point P and line L that doesn't contain it, there's only one line that contains P and is parallel(does not intersect) L. the thing is, as mathematicians, we doubt everything, so parabolic and hyberbolic geometries were formed with the evasion from this axiom. parabolic replaces it with 'there are no parallel lines', and hyperbolic says, 'there are infinite lines that go through P and are parallel to L'. parabolic is cooler.
yea, i see quite alot of reasons to hate math.
btw.

Sorry for not being here these past few days. I'm actually camping right now with my parent's friends and their families. We're a few hours north of where we live and it's actually pretty cold up here. Well, I seem to be the only one who doesn't find it to be very cold. It's only around 60-70 degrees F with a fairly strong wind chill.
Btw, this was posted from my dad's droid and it took forever to write up, even with the keypad | | Isa |

How is that possible? We're having warmer weather in Sweden currently, and we're way north of Maine, which is constantly joked about how cold it is (from what I've seen at least). | | Livio |

Maybe because the elevation around here is pretty high
Oh and I forgot to mention that I get home tomorrow night, but I won't be here on Monday or teusday because I need to go to a mandatory 2-day new student orientation at U of A. | | shos |

You find 60-70 F cold? It was about 65 F here last week, and it was the warmest week we had since last summer.

60-70 degrees Fahrenheit? Well, that's how cold(warm) it is where I live right now. Really, since Livio comes from Arizona, no wonder. | | FlashMarsh |

Kelvin is the only correct way to measure temperatures. Unless you wish to with J/k or eV/k.

Kelvin is good enough for me
and that means 70 F is definitely the best temperature that could be, imo. 60 F may be alittle cold, but it sure isn't enough to wear long sleeves. in Israel it's usually around 300 K; but this week it's gonna be hot, we'll probably get to 310 or something.

btw, sorry for not being on here so much. I spent the last two days at new student orientation at the University of Arizona. I had time on Sunday, when I came back from camping to upload that stuff to the Aeon level editor discussion board, but I was too tired-- and I was playing Super Mario Galaxy 2.
I purposely avoided learning anything at all about the game so that I may enjoy it better. I wasn't expecting it to be as great as the original, but IGN and Gamespot gave it a perfect 10?? | | shos |

I was trying to do that too, but then somebody posted that there's this guy somewhere that tells you to take a break if you play for a long time.... SO NOW IT'S ALL RUINED! | | jellsprout |

I think Gamerankings put SMG I as the highest rated game of all time. Don't get me wrong here, I think Mario Galaxy was a pretty good game, but I think it should barely be in the top 50 games of all time. Even within the Mario platformer series, Mario Bros 3, Mario World and Mario 64 are far superior to it.
Then there is also Gamespot firing a rater because it gave Twilight Princess somewhere around an 8/10, a rating which actually fits TP pretty well (very good, but not legendary). I don't think Brawl, Spirit Tracks or New Super Mario Bros have gotten any ratings below 9/10, when they should get an 8/10 at highest.
Simply put, all raters are extremely biased fanboys that have already given that game that rating before it even came out. Don't trust ratings, trust the reviews of your peers.
In any case, I don't recommend getting the game till at least 6 months after it comes out, as you won't be able to get any unbiased reviews by then. And by that time you'll be able to get a used copy, saving 20-30% of the money.

That gamespot rating was like an 8.9 or 8.7. I didn't know he got fired, but it was probably because gamespot tries to have "accurate" ratings, and when most of the Internet disagrees with you, it makes you question your own accuracy.
And jell, you don't seem to understand that different people have different points of view. What I mean is that when someone likes something more than you do, it's not because they're biased, it's because they have different tastes. There's no one "correct" way to rank all the world's games from best to worst because we all have our own separate opinions on them.
So that's my little rant on how jell talks about games. | | jellsprout |

Actually, if you look at the opinions of people on more neutral boards or fora (so not the SMG board on GameFAQs/Gamespot, but rather the PotD board or something), you see that generally most people agree that the game is good, but not nearly worth the hype it receives. And this isn't just for SMG, but also for games like GTA IV, FF XIII and basically every other game.
But seriously, when looking at Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Super Smash Brothers, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Kingdom Hearts, Fire Emblem, Warcraft/Starcraft, Elder Scrolls, Street Fighter, Sonic, Command and Conquer, GTA or even the other Mario games, do you honestly think that Spirit Tracks deserves the legendary status that an 8.5/10 signifies?
The problem with reviews is that people are too afraid to offend all the blind fanboys. The guidelines for rating is something like
1 - unplayable
2 - terrible
3 - bad
4 - below avarage, but still playable
5 - avarage
6 - good
7 - very good
8 - amazing
9 - legendary
10 - the best games of history, redefining the entire industry
Not
1 - E.T. the game or Superman 64
2 - Absolutely terrible game that barely anybody has ever played
3 - Visionmaster/oldschool console that barely sold game
4 - internet meme games that none of the raters have even played
5 - indy game
6 - freeware
7 - Activision/EA/Ubisoft/other "corporate pig" game
8 - Small Nintendo/Sqare Enix/Rare game or hyped "corporate pig" game
9 - Advertised Nintendo/Sqare Enix/Rare game
10 - Hyped Nintendo/Square Enix/Rare game
as it has currently become.
Even though there has been no information shown yet about the new Zelda game or Pikmin 3, I already know they will get an average score of around 9.7, simply because they are "major Nintendo games", and if they receive even a decimal lower than that all the fanboys will start to rant, even those that haven't even played the game yet. It happened to Spirit Tracks, and you've got to admit that game was far from "amazing". Hell, it even happened to Madworld and Spectrobes, and what has become of those?

but also not every game-review site sees it like they're grading games. I know the IGN editors are told to look at it as a product-review service, where they take things into accounts such as price, how much value you're getting, and what else is out there. | | canadianstickdeath |

Gerstman (or however you spell) was fired for giving TP an 8.8? I don't think those facts are exactly right. So far as I remember, the actual reasons for his firing were never actually disclosed. It was claimed by CNET that it didn't have to do with the actual scores (maybe the quality of the reviews or something), but it was quite a conspiracy... And the firing took place well after the TP review?
When I first saw the 8.8/10, it seemed strange. I reserved judgment, but 8.8 was far from being in line with the other reviews that I was seeing at the time. After playing the game, I tend to agree with the 8.8 assessment. But then, this same guy also gave my favourite game (and from what I remember, Jell's favourite 3D Zelda), MM, an 8.4/10.
I got SMG2 today, but I won't get the chance to play it until at least tomorrow. I'm at my aunts tonight (I sent her after it), and my Wii is still at my grandparents'. Metacritic currently has it at 9.8/10 with a user score of 9.5/10. You can't trust the user average just yet, because typically the people who get the game this early are the ones who are more likely to like it. Usually, on Metacritic, if you just average out the two scores, you get something pretty close to what the game should actually be rated. My theory is that the users don't just give the game the score they think it deserves, but rather, try to offset the critic score, even though the two scores aren't averaged on the site. There is a site, I think, that actually averages the scores, but I don't know if you can trust people to be fair, when their rates are actually having an affect. SMG was my farourite game in recent memory, and a lot of the reviews seem to think that this one is better than the first, so needless to say, I'm excited to get to play it.
People who only have one current-gen console (which I imagine would be the majority, but it's not like I have statistical evidence for that or anything) have a vested interest in the quality of the games that are released on that console. If good games come out, then more people will buy that console in order to play those games, and then more good games will come out on that console to take advantage of the fact that more people already own that console... or at least, one might expect that it might work that way. This could at least partly explain why the "fanboys" exist and what they are trying to accomplish. | | |
