I'm still amazed by how they designed those buildings. They collapsed vertically, instead of tipping over, so who knows what kind of carnage that would've brought if they tipped over?

Actually, they were very poorly designed. Such buildings should be able to withstand an explosion such as that.
actually, no; they're supposed to be able to withstand big stuff indeed, but a plane that comes in who-knows-how-many hundreds of mph and crashes inside directly - i don't think anything in that height can withstand that. not even mentioning two. a 1-floor-high bunker may be able to survive that. may.

Buildings of that height are supposed to be heavily reinforced. Unless you use demolitions in specific locations, the building should be able to withstand it.
And it isn't the aircraft that caused the collapse, but the fire it started. A plane of a few tons won't budge a massive concrete building like that.

Jell, in all honesty, I think that if you're building such a huge tower, you shouldn't really have to reinforce everything to the point where it becomes absurd. The Twin Towers were built in the 70's where the US didn't have the al-Qaida to worry about, and if Soviet were to attack, they wouldn't go for WTC.

It isn't against terrorist attacks, but against its own weight. Seriously, a plane flying into a building like that is like throwing a penny at a closet. It was the fire that ultimately weakened the foundationing and made the building collapse. Especially with a building of such height, were firemen aren't able to go, it is pretty essential to fireproof the building. Any fire could have done that.

well jell, throwing a penny at a closet can break the closet if you throw it hard enough. and if you take proportions, it's like shooting a closet.

the building can stand despite its weight and it can hold much more than that. in this case, let's assume that the building is able to stand with at most 300,000,000 kilograms of internal weight. now, the plane, weighing moreless 7,000,000 kilograms 'only', comes in a speed of, suppose, 300 mph=500 kmph = 139m/s. now, this means that the momentum of the plane crush would be around 973,000,000 Newton - which is almost a third of the building's maximum capability for weight.

that means, sir, that a crush would make a very serious effect on the building. if the planes hit the top of the building, it would be as if you added 60 more floors to it, causing it to fall and make much more damage. the plane hit around the middle of the building, so it would make it similar to adding around 15 more floors to the building; that may not be so amazing - it's around 10% of the height, but along with the fires, there was no need for the second plane.

if the ones that took over the plane really were up for it, and it's likely that they were, they would have sped up the plane to more than the normal speed of 500kmph, thus making the hit damage far more serious.

but who knows. these are just estimated numbers. i do think the proportions should be close to it.

Your estimates are pretty far off. The heaviest plane ever build, the Antonov-An-225 weighs 600,000 kilos. The Boeing 747 weighs 405,000 kilos.
Either of the Twin Towers weighs about 475,000,000 kilos.

Planes generally fly at a speed of 800 km/h = 222 m/s. This means the planes had a kinetic energy of about 10,000,000,000 J. The width of the Twin Towers was 62 meters. From footage you can see the explosion emerging from the other side of the impact, so not all energy was used in the impact.
So the force exerted on the building would have been about 7,000,000,000 / 62 = 110,000,000 N. That is still less than 3% of the weight of the building. If you also take the force winds exert on the building and the fact the building has never shown any signs of succumbing to any of these other forces, the impact of the planes weren't really that bad.
As I said, it were the fires started by these planes that weakened the structure and made the building collapse.

The planes that hit the WTC were boeing 767s. If they really wanted to hit the buildings hard, they would fly probably at mach 1. I don't know much about this stuff, so i can't really be in this conversation.

That weighs even less, only 170,000 kg or so. And it has a max speed of 900 km/h.
So that means it would give a force of about 62.000.000 N on the Twin Towers. That's a little over 1% of it's mass. Pretty much neglectable.

lemme ask a question because I don't know alot about this stuff:

If the collapse was caused by impact like shos said, wouldn't it collapse insantly?

So, why are we talking about something that happened 8 years ago on the "Current events" topic?

Don't get me wrong, I get how it's related, but still.

I'm just happy that none of us are those stupid "9/11 conspiracy" believers.

no, you should record a video of 'how to watch youtube videos'. now THAT would be helpful.

now bout the twins, i never thought i would be so far off with the numbers xD those were wild guesses. do they know at what height the plane hit the building?...
also, did the other one hit the same building or the other? :O

now, for some wierd reason, i made a livio marathon, and recorded playthroughs of the caves up on livio_3000, acceleron_3000, and cruz_3000. these would be Meteor Shower, Primary Lotus, and uhhh stress test. my computer lagged so horribly i better make a new one for Primary Lotus, cuz there's one part which it just freezes it was horribly slow, and made the caves very hard - it took 123549723492164 years for the game to realize that i ticked the space button. and in that cave, you need it to be good >_<

shos that sounds like it would make one heck of a walkthrough with the right music. Unless you plan on releasing them in 3 parts.

The second half of Meteor Shower is probably impossible, but this is Shos we're talking about.
