Please get in the habit of emailing me when the server is down, so that you won't have to wait three days for it to get back up again. My email is easy to remember: livio@interguild.org

So in a survival server, will the goal be to build whatever you want, but you have mine everything yourself? Will there be some kind of economy system that will allow players to buy/sell/trade things? I like the idea of not having to craft everything, like maybe I could buy things if I wanted to. Or maybe I don't know since I never seriously played survival mode for extended periods of time.

And will the server enforce against cheats (fly mod) or should we just not care?

And I think it would be cool if everyone wasn't so spread out like last time. It really makes the world feel disjointed.

I recommend looking at the server Tomian Empire for inspiration. They have some awesome plugins that we might consider using, like an rpg-style skills plugin that makes you better at mining, fight, wood-cutting, etc as you use those skills.

oh yeah, I imagine things will be much more serious now that it's not a creative server.

I also feel like there will be times when I'm going to miss the creative side of Minecraft. I always though it'd be cool if we could somehow turn the Nether into a survival world, and then the normal world into a creative one. Or I don't know...

Or we could get another minecraft server, so one server will be creative while the other will be survival. We're currently paying $4 and the Interguild makes about $20 a month. In fact, what if we just got a better server plan with more RAM and just run two worlds? Then people could at least talk to each other from the different worlds.

Get whitelisted into CraftedMovie's server. They have an anarchy, PVE and a Creative world, and your items are not carried over.

This looks relevant: http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/edit-misc-tp-fun-multiverse-2-3-world-management-bukkitdev.3707/

Assuming this plugin has features to prevent that, maybe we can make it so that you can't transfer any items in between the worlds, so if you want to travel away from the survival server, you better save your items in a secure chest somewhere.

That won't be great. Attention will be split over the three worlds, causing all of them to be under-populated.

I think we should just try out a survival server. If we don't like it, then we could go back to creative.

Having two worlds would be okay, but three is way too much. But yeah I'm not sure how attention-splitting might affect the server. In theory, I imagine people spending their time in the world that has more users on it whenever their online. So if I log into the creative side, I see people on the survival side, and I decide to join them. Or it could work the other way around.

Plus, having multiple worlds just sounds cool.

And then you have people like me who would just sit on the survival server all day. Tehehe.

Here's an idea. Let's import the Brohoster server as the creative world.

I think that when you go into the creative server you should automatically get creative, not like the last two servers where all you do is /i, you don't get instant break or flying.

'In the chatbox, I' said:
The new minecraft server is currently running a typical survival world as well as our brohoster world (aka 'Different' set to creative mode. Now I'm importing our most recent backup of the 2nd Interguild Minecraft Server, dated Dec 2011

That's how it works now. Although I really don't like how easy it is to accidentally destroy stuff in creative mode. Is there a mod that can remove that feature?

You guys really went crazy with the exploring last time. The backup of the second server is almost twice as large as the brohoster server.

Here's how the new server looks right now.

LIST OF WORLDS:

"Survival" - A brand new, pure minecraft survival world
"Nether" - A brand new nether, for the survival world
"End" - A brand new The End, for the survival world
"Different" - The First Interguild MC Server, was hosted under Brohoster
"InterServer" - The 2nd Interguild MC Server, what we had before Avante lost our data

LIST OF PLUGINS INSTALLED:

MultiVerse - allows for multiple worlds and commands for travelling between them.
PermissionsBukkit - allows us to set permissions, and MultiVerse works well with it.

I'll finish setting up stuff the next time I get time.

The plan is to merge the two creative servers, and I feel like we're going to end up copy-pasting from InterServer to Different, since Different has a better infrastructure with the NER. This means that if we're going to have a new spawn point, it'll be for the Survival server, in which case I feel like the only real way to do this spawn point justice would be if it was built together by the survival players, following survivalist rules.

Today I worked on the Minecraft server for about 5 hours. Here's a summary of everything that got done, and for your reference, here's the current list of worlds on the server:

CURRENT LIST OF WORLDS:

(1) "Survival" - A brand new, pure minecraft survival world
(1.1) "Nether" - A brand new nether, for the survival world
(1.2) "End" - A brand new The End, for the survival world
(2) "Different" - The First Interguild MC Server, was hosted under Brohoster
(3) "InterServer2" - The 2nd Interguild MC Server, what we had before Avante lost our data.

PROGRESS REPORT!

(0) Before I started, the server was just a blank, brand new survival server with the latest Bukkit version installed.
(1) I installed the MultiVerse plugin, which allows us to have multiple worlds on the server.
(2) I dug up my old backup of the brohoster server, decompressed it, uploaded it, imported it, and converted it into the new world-generation format of the most recent minecraft versions. It took a long time to do, but it was worth it to spawn in the Beacon again and to walk outside to see D52 watching over me. Multiverse allows me to set specific settings for each world, so I turned of animal/monster spawning in this world.
(3) I then did the same for the InterServer2 backup (the one with Beacon 2.0), but the backup was from December, so not everything is in there.
(4) The next thing I did was install PermissionsBukkit, which is the official permissions plugin for Bukkit. So far I have the basics of it working, but I still need to really sit down and configure the permissions for all of the plugins. This is likely something I'll do once all the plugins are done and installed.
(5) After that, I installed World Edit on the server, and I even installed a super-cool client-side mod for World Edit that highlights your current selection so that you can actually see what you're doing. I also confirmed that it is very possible to copy and paste things in between worlds!
(6) The next plugin I installed was Multiverse-Portals, which allows us to create portals to travel between the worlds rather than relying on commands. The awesome thing about is that portals can be made out of anything you want, even thin air. I built some really cool-looking series of portals inside the Beacon (in Different) connecting you to the spawn area of InterServer2 and the spawn point for Survival. Each portal has a counter-portal to bring you back to where you came from.
(7) I just finished installing a plugin called BetterAlias, which will allow us to create user-friendly commands that run the not-user-friendly commands for us.

CURRENT LIST OF PLUGINS INSTALLED

(0) Bukkit (built into our hosting plan)
(1) Multiverse-Core
(2) PermissionsBukkit
(3) WorldEdit
(4) Multiverse-Portals
(5) BetterAlias

Man, bukkit has improved so much in terms of user-friendliness that the last time I had to deal with it.

THINGS TO DO NEXT:

(1) Configure the "BetterAlias" plugin, since I haven't touched it yet. Multiverse already has a few of the commands that we had on the old server, like 'tp', and I want to be able to call it by typing "/tp player", rather than "/mv tp player".
(2) Make 'Different' the default/main world for the server, where first-time visitors spawn in.
(3) Install MultiVerse-Inventories, which will allow us to restrict the items that players bring in and out of worlds.
(4) Install some kind of plugin that will hopefully make it harder to delete things in creative mode. Haily pointed out that having your main action button be a delete button is not only dangerous, but it's the complete opposite of what it means to be "creative".
(5) Install other useful plugins that I might be forgetting about. Maybe the compass plugin? And something that will format the chat screen to something with more colors. I still have the list of all of the old plugins on both of the old servers, so I can always see what we used and see if there's a better or more up-to-date version out there by now.
(6) Once all the plugins are sorted out, I can finally start sorting out the permissions, creating the different user ranks, and testing for security/greifing vulnerabilities.

By the way, when you switch between worlds, Multiverse automatically changes your gamemode to match the gamemode of the world, and the only way to bypass that is to use the /gamemode command which is only available to OPs. There's still a problem with bringing stuff in and out of the worlds, so that's what MultiVerse-Inventories is supposed to fix.

We also need to start figuring out what projects we can salvage from InterServer2 and where to put them in Different. We don't have the live server map of InterServer2 working anymore, but we still have this, which is surprisingly accurate to how the world looks right now: http://interguild.org/minecraft/InterServer/ Meanwhile, we also have the Super Map from the old server: http://www.interguild.org/members/forums/topic.php?id=6341
