Please get in the habit of emailing me when the server is down, so that you won't have to wait three days for it to get back up again. My email is easy to remember: livio@interguild.org

Alright, I bought a minecraft server from Avante Hosting. Here are the specs:

IP Address: 91.121.119.192:2518
RAM: 512 MB
Player Limit: 8 players
Price: $6 USD per month

But I only paid $5.40 USD for the first month because I used a promo code for a one-time 10% discount.

I copied all of the plugins from the old server into the new one, but I'm still having trouble trying to figure out how to configure it all correctly.

Here are the current world settings:

World Name: InterServer
Default Player Permissions: Guest
IP Auth Role: Guest (this is when 2 players log on from the same IP)
Give-Item Permissions: User
Teleport Permissions: Moderator
Summon Permissions: Moderator
Chat Permissions: Guest
Server JAR: Mod: Craftbukkit

I can't figure out how to give building permissions. I tried setting my account as the Owner, but that still didn't work. I then tried adding myself as an OP, but still nothing. I once got myself powers for a limited time, but then I decided to add in all the plugins, which required me to turn the server off. When I turned it back on, the world seed regenerated itself, rather than maintaining the old one.

Alright, I managed to get the permissions to be the same as the old server, which means building rights are back! Now I just need to figure out how to give them to new members.

Before we start building, how about first deciding how the server will be set up?
I still suggest that we use all coordinates with a negative y-coordinate for building without item spawning and other commands, using all coordinates with a positive y-coordinate for building with commands. The only exception is the spawn building, which I think should be made entirely with commands. I suppose the no-commands area could have their own welcome building.

Edit: And because we don't have any plug-ins for this, the no-command area needs to be done on honor rules.

kro already started building.

Basically, it seems like everyone's got ideas for what the spawn should look like, so I thought maybe we could let people start building prototypes for it and then later we could all vote on the one we like best. Kro already started building his at /warp krospawn, and Haily wants to build one too. I'm not sure the negative coordinate thing is very important, though, so it's no big deal where spawn ends up being.

What should we do about mobs? Creepers are already causing problems, so I'll tun of monsters.

jell, Haily thinks we should just have two worlds so that we can get the permissions right. He also suggested if maybe we could just use the nether world instead.

I renamed krospawn to hkspawn, because Haily and kro are building their own spawn idea together. I might make one myself.

I hope we can find another purpose for the spawns that don't end up winning.

I do too. My planned spawn can very easily be reused in a sorta palace with only a very small amount of tweaking. Good luck to all! May be the best man/woman/thing/hamster/Yuggy win!

As I am going away, I will not be able to contribute to this, but I will build my blimp when I get back from holiday. Anyway, good luck to all!

You guys aren't all just building your spawn points right next to eachother, are you? because I would think that the idea would be to build them apart from eachother, and then when it's decided which is the winner, everyone starts building other things around that spawn point, instead of the spawn point being the middle of a bunch of other attempted spawn points.

Anyways, I liked the idea that the spawn point spawns you at the top of some high point which gives you a 360 view of everything around, whether it be a really tall tower, or a mountain as I think jell suggested.

Actually it's pretty common. :b In both higher mathematics and mechanics at the university, it's that way.

General Cartesian coordinates have the z unit vector pointing from bottom to top. The x unit vector points from left to right and the y vector points from back to front. The problem with switching the y and z unit vectors means that this basis is no longer right-handed, forcing you to switch the definition of the vector product. In physics, if you are considering a 2D system with an upward direction you still generally use z to describe this vector instead of y.

I've never seen the z-axis used for bottom to top. And besides, he failed when he made the top of maps point East rather than North.

I started building my spawn entry at /warp livspawn. I'm currently in the process of making roads around it so that it's easier to get an idea of how to organize the area and where to build things.

I didn't put in any seed into this world, and so a lot of the terrain isn't very flat, which makes building quite a challenge (but also more fun?) Either way, this server has some amazing natural locations, more so than the previous server.

So far this "build your own spawn" contest is pretty informal. Do you guys think we should make it a formal competition? And rather than having the winner decided by a poll, should it be judged by judges?

Good thing you started this on your own. I might drop by when things are done.

You may remove my OP powers if you so wish.

Done.

So for the sake of the eventual "real minecraft" section of the world, I enabled monster spawning. However, I disabled creeper explosions, so we won't have to worry about griefing. I hear some people say that mobs make the game laggy for them, and so for that reason animal spawning is still off. That way, you only have nighttime to worry about.

In the Spawn area, have the rules be ended with a note saying "Post "All purple okapis go to heaven" on the Interguild.org forums if you want builder powers.". We want out new members to at least know the rules.
