Please get in the habit of emailing me when the server is down, so that you won't have to wait three days for it to get back up again. My email is easy to remember: livio@interguild.org | « Forum Index < The Minecraft Board«Previous | 1, 2, 3, . . . 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 | Next» | Isa |

That's still the old ip address, we haven't been told the new one yet...
Also I assume permission ranks carry over from the last server, for example will I still have a custom title?
Otherwise, great work, it sounds very good... | | Quirvy |

So wait, you brought back the original interguild server? Then clearly one of your highest priorities project-salvaging-wise should be the completion of the city of lakes.

That doesn't sound like Survival to me. don't worry, the permissions system allows us to block certain plugins depending on which world you're in.
Yeah, I haven't posted the new IP yet because it's much more convenient and less distracting to work on the server when no one is online. | | Shavey Dave |

You are set to creative mode in the creative server so you can.
Also you should still let people use the /give command in creative so they can give theirselves items which can't be found in the creative inventory. | | Livio |

I spent most of yesterday moving back to Phoenix, but I did spend about 40 minutes configuring the BetterAlias plugin, and I used it to make these commands:
For those with tp permissions:
/to [player] - warps you to that player
/bring [player] - warps that player to you
For those with world teleporting permissions:
/world [worldName] - warps you to the spawn of the specified world.
/worldlist - prints out a list of all of the worlds.
/spawn - Brings you to the spawn of your current world
For those with the permissions to change their gamemodes at will:
/gm - toggles your gamemode from survival to creative or vice versa | | jazz |

Is it going to be public or private? Also can we have a /vanish command? | | Yuggy |

Are permission ranks carrying over from the last server, for example will I still have a custom title, weather powers and worldedit? | | Livio |

'jazz' said: Is it going to be public or private? Also can we have a /vanish command? What would the vanish command do? Make you invisible? Hide you from the online list? Both?
And I'm not sure what you mean by public or private. It'll be like before where guests will be able to browse the server, but they won't be able to do anything. As it stands now, they can't even place minecarts, open doors, or trigger switches/buttons/plates.
'Yuggy' said: Are permission ranks carrying over from the last server, for example will I still have a custom title, weather powers and worldedit? I'll keep the basic stuff, but I probably won't keep the custom titles. And we may end up having to create some new ranks, if we don't automatically want to give Builders permission to build in the survival server.
PROGRESS REPORT!
Today I worked on the server for about 7.5 hours! That's impressive considering the main thing I did today was go to a family friend's bar mitzvah.
(1) I made Different the default spawn world for newcomers, as opposed to the new Survival world.
(2) I wrote an alias for the /give command, which allows you to write /i [item id/name] to get 64 of an item, or /i [item] [amount]
(3) I installed Multiverse-Inventories, which allows us to give players different inventories depending on what world their in. As it's set up right now, players share inventories between the two creative worlds (Different and InterServer2), which is useful because people who travel through those worlds are likely going to be using World Edit to move stuff over, and you would like to have your wand travelling with you. But if you go to the Survival world, you will have a different inventory maintained in that world.
(4) So I couldn't find a plugin that would make creative mode more 'safe' to use, so I just turned the two creative worlds into "survival" mode and altered a bunch of settings to make them feel more creative. For instance, you never get hungry when in these worlds, difficulty is set to Peaceful so that you auto-heal, and I'll set the permissions of most plugins so that they may only be used in these worlds.
(5) I installed a mod called SimpleFly, which allows you to turn on/off a flight system equivalent to creative mode's flight system. When this system is on, you can start/stop flying at anytime by double-jumping, and you will not receive any damage from PVP, fire, lava, suffocation, or drowning. I never liked how on the old server we were immune to all those things, but now if you just leave this plugin off, you'll be vulnerable to all these things again. Of course, you'll still auto-heal when the danger has passed, but the important thing is that this kind of your-life-is-in-danger feedback helps the world feel much more real.
(6) Next, I started looking for a plugin for manipulating time and whether. I ended up installing a glitchy mod called TimeAndWeahterControl. It's glitchy in that it doesn't seem to respond to changes in its config file, but aside from that, it lets you change the time/wheather to pre-specified values (which means you can't set the time to a 6:01 or something, it either has to be dusk, day, midnight, etc.). But it does allow you to let players start a time/weather vote, where the time/weather is changed depending on whether a majority of the users online would like a change.
(7) I looked into installing two plugins: NoLagg and LogBlock, but I decided against it because it looked like they wouldn't work. NoLagg has threading issues with WorldEdit, while LogBlock requires that we have a MySQL database on our server. Perhaps we should upgrade our plan? I do have an irrational craving for more RAM, for some reason...
(8) I installed the iChat plugin, which allows us to format the chat console. Now when people post, you can see their rank, and their name is a different color depending on their rank. I considered making the chat also display which world you were posting from, but that's just way too much text to have before each of your posts.
(9) I installed the JustWarp plugin, which gives us the same warp functionality that we've had on the past couple of servers. I found the warplist for the original server (Different), but it was saved in a format that was incompatible with the current server. So I wrote a script that translated all of those old warp points into the new format, and now we have all of the warps back on Different! I still haven't translated the warps for InterServer2 yet, however.
(10) I installed WorldGaurd, which not only gives us the ability to set up uneditable zones and stuff, but it also allows us to ban certain items and edit tons and tons of options about what type of effects are valid and for which world. For instance, I used WorldGaurd to remove fall damage in the creative worlds, as well as to prevent damage/spread from fire and explosions. I haven't banned TNT yet, because I saw that I could just disable its damage, but I wonder if I should ban it anyway, since it could be used to cause lag on the server? Or just ban it once it becomes a problem.
(11) Haily started helping me set up the new permissions system. It's turning out to be a lot more work than anticipated, especially with all of the plugins we have and the fact that they must not be allowed in the Survival world. So far we set only some of permissions for the Default and Builder ranks. It's because this is so tedious that I'm not really motivated to start making custom ranks.
(12) After Haily went to sleep, I couldn't properly test the permissions thing anymore, so I installed the real-time super map that we had on the last server, called DynMap. I generated full maps of Different, InterServer2, Survival_normal, Survival_nether, and Survival_the_end. The Survival maps took less than a minute to make, but it was Different, and especially InterServer2, that took a really long time to render. Seriously, you guys need to stop exploring for the sake of expanding the map. There's plenty of strange and awesome places already on the map that you probably haven't even visited!
CURRENT LIST OF PLUGINS INSTALLED
(0) Bukkit (built into our hosting plan)
(1) Multiverse-Core
(2) PermissionsBukkit
(3) WorldEdit
(4) Multiverse-Portals
(5) BetterAlias
(6) Multiverse-Inventories
(7) SimpleFly
(8) TimeAndWeatherControl
(9) iChat
(10) JustWarp
(11) WorldGuard
(12) DynMap
As I was looking through the list of plugins for the old servers, I noticed that we had a few not-so-useful/redundant plugins, and so I'm really trying to keep our number of plugins to a minimum this time. For instance, I didn't install CommandBook, which gave us a lot of cool plugins like /tp, /compass, /rocket, /spawn, /i, /more, etc., but many of these features are already supported by current plugins, so I'm instead looking for ways that I can use command aliases so that we won't have to make the server slower. The trade-off is that we lose some of the more random but fun commands. This is why I stuck to the TimeAndWeatherControl plugin, as opposed to resorting to installing CommandBook.
THINGS TO DO NEXT:
(1) I forgot to test whether or not the /i command works with extra item data, such as wool:red. I'll have to test that tomorrow.
(2) Right now the Nether and the End are a part of the Survival Server. Do we really want this? If so, I forgot to link the inventories for these worlds with the normal Survival world, and I should probably fix that.
(3) I seem to have somehow gotten the compass to work, but I have no idea which plugin this feature is a part and so I don't know how to control its permissions. Maybe it's just a core part of bukkit?
(4) Import the warp list for InterServer2
(5) Finish configuring permissions and ranks.
It took me almost exactly an hour to write this report. But man, these progress reports are so useful, because they keep reminding me of things that I forgot to do. Plus, it's so easy to be able to just pull up the previous report to look at what you have to do next or to remind yourself of something. | | Rocketguy2 |

You should allow passage to the nether and end only to people in survival, as well as have them keep the inventories of people in survival.
TNT, lava, fire & water should be able to be placed in survival, but please turn off firespread.
Lava, water, and fire should be able to be placed in creative I think, as long as firespread is off.
I think you should also get a plugin that makes a message show up whenever someone places TNT, lava, fire or water. | | Isa |

Exactly. Fire can also be useful for fireplaces and stuff, and sometimes just for effect. Maybe architect and above can have permission to use fire? | | jazz |

/vanish makes you invisible so you can watch griefers as they work. Not from the player list though, but that would be better.
So I think the way to make the new server better populated is to use a plugin that limits you to a certain area, then gradually increase the area as time goes on.

Anti-Grief plugin.
Why not let others players edit in the Survival world but none of the others? But if we do that we might need more admins. | | krotomo |
